During five days over the school holidays last year, 6-10 October 2017, 15 lives were lost on our roads. The total deaths for the whole month was 32. “If the same thing happens this year, we are going to have 32 people die in October. Who is it going to be, you, a member of your family, a friend, or one of your colleagues?” says Sandra Venables, Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing.
NZ Transport Agency acting Director Safety and Environment Lisa Rossiter agrees. “If you’re going away with your family these school holidays, ensure you are well rested before you set off, and ensure your focus is driving safely on the roads.
“Watch your speed and following distances, make sure you’re driving fresh and alert, don’t get distracted by the kids in the back or by your phone, and make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelt"

… View moreWork to improve safety at the busy SH6/Tucker Beach Road intersection near Queenstown’s Frankton is now underway. As a result, there will be temporary changes to managing traffic through the construction site which will affect people living in or visiting Quail Rise and Tucker Beach Road.
There will be a loop detour in each direction to get back to Frankton and Queenstown on SH6 from Tucker Beach Road and to get onto Tucker Beach Road from the Shotover River side from Monday, 1 October. Tucker Beach Road will be left in, and left out only for eight to ten weeks into early December. This traffic plan will be reviewed after four weeks for opportunities to reduce the duration of the turning restrictions.
This $6.4 million NZ Transport Agency Tucker Beach Road project (external link) features a safety underpass below SH6 at the Shotover River Bridge. It then links to a slip road for Tucker Beach Road traffic going west toward Frankton or Queenstown. At the moment, a right-hand turn across two lanes of highway traffic is needed to make this journey.
Temporary traffic management will be in place for eight to ten weeks from Monday, 1 October, and will be needed on occasions over the seven month life of this project to ensure everyone’s safety - road users and construction crew.
The full project will be completed in April or early May, although the new highway slip road west to Frankton could be available from March.

This year Age Concern New Zealand want all New Zealanders to sign up as Age Concern Dignity Champions and stand up for the human rights of older Kiwis.
“There is no excuse for elder abuse, says Stephanie Clare, Age Concern New Zealand Chief Executive. I am appalled that we are still having to deal with cases each day where older people are taken advantage of.
“Just because someone is older it doesn’t mean they are less valuable, have less purpose or should lose basic human rights, the right to make their own choices and respect from those around them.
“Of the cases we see, 75% of alleged abusers are family members, either adult children or partners of adult children and that needs to stop!
“So come on Kiwis we all have a part to play. You can take a stand against ageism and join me by signing up today!” says Stephanie.
An Age Concern Dignity Champion pledges to:
• Reject stereotypes and focus on the uniqueness of every individual
• Speak up when they hear people speaking negatively about growing old
• Have the courage to question practices they feel are disrespectful to older people
• Not patronise older people
• Be patient, polite and friendly
• Have zero tolerance for abuse or neglect
• Build relationships – they combat isolation and loneliness by getting to know the older people in their lives.

Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Jim Boult suggested this is the perfect opportunity for locals to see what commuting to the CBD could be like by giving up the car for a day. “We’ve all been heavily reliant on cars in Queenstown, but times are changing. We’re already seeing increasing bus passenger numbers who are rating the service highly. As the town continues to grow, where it’s possible and practical we need to think differently about how we get around. So why not try bringing the kids into town on the bus for free on the 22 September and see if it could work for you too,” said Mayor Boult.

Widespread weather warnings are in place for the south of the country as a front moves northwards up the country, preceded by a strong northwesterly flow and followed by cold southerlies.
Motorists are warned to drive with care and to take chains on the Crown Range, between Queenstown and Wanaka. Queenstown Airport remained open, although flights before 10am were cancelled.
The front had moved over the lower South Island overnight on Sunday, bringing with it heavy rain and snow and it's expected to move slowly northeastwards during Monday. A snow warning is in place for the regions until 3pm Monday.
