Helping … View moreDo you know what your rights are at work? How about your rights to do with renting or owning a home? If you buy something that’s faulty do you know what your options are? This CAB Awareness Week from 8-14 April you’re being invited to Discover Your Rights – Tūhuratia ō motika!
Helping people to know what their rights and responsibilities are and how they can act on these is core to what the Citizens Advice Bureau is about. We help people from all walks of life to access the information they need so they are empowered to take next steps and to resolve their problems.
A highlight of this year’s Awareness Week is the launch of the CAB’s new public website - www.cab.org.nz.... After a year of development and user testing, the resulting website provides an accessible, mobile-friendly, knowledgebase of 2,000 questions and answers about people’s rights that are based on real issues confronted by clients.
The information about rights is grounded in the law but is practical and is expressed in a way that’s easy to understand.
The website also provides a directory of more than 30,000 community organisations so that the CAB can help connect people with any additional services they need.
We’re keen to break down any barriers people face in finding out what their rights are. Our new website is a fantastic resource for the whole community, and complements the amazing face-to-face and phone service provided by our skilled and dedicated volunteers.

Council encourages the use of heat pumps and modern, ultra-low emission burners that emit less smoke than older, more polluting burners. If you still have an open fire you’re encouraged to install a heat pump or new wood burner.
Open fires are no longer permitted in new house builds in town. If you have a wood burner it’s important to burn only dry, seasoned wood.

Applications open on 1 April for Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund (WMIF). Businesses, iwi, and education and community groups can apply for up to $5,000 towards their project.

Now more than ever, the fern seems to best capture the spirit of our country. If we look to our Māori roots, we are reminded of the twist or pikorua which resembles two intertwined pikopiko ferns - a fern known for thriving in dark, damp areas of our woods. A reminder that difficult conditions can actually be an opportunity for tremendous growth.
The entanglement of the pikorua also has no beginning or end which is often used to represent an everlasting bond. Although we are all on our own path in life, in the end we always come back together - we are all connected through our interwoven lives.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the National Remembrance Service will take place on Friday 29 March at 10am, in Christchurch’s Hagley Park.
Marlborough Mayor John Leggett says it is important Marlburians are able to participate in a nationwide event and get a further opportunity to reflect on the events in Christchurch.
“The council has an important role to play in bringing our community together to mark what occurred, and reflect on what it means for our nation. My thanks to the ASB Theatre for hosting this event.”
The livestreaming event will see the National Remembrance Service shown on a big screen in the ASB Theatre. Entry will be free, with capacity limited to 700 people. Doors will open at 9am and attendees are asked to be seated by 9.45am.
The mayor will make a brief welcoming speech just before the livestream commences at 9.55am. The livestream will finish at 11am.
The event is supported by the Blenheim Police, who will have a visible security presence at the event. Attendees are requested not to bring prams, suitcases, large backpacks or trolley bags. The service will also be shown at the Marlborough District Library in Blenheim and the Picton Library and Service Centre.
