The Laneway Lament

Oliver Neighbourly Lead from One Tree Point

Here I am, back in town
After eight months of absence
Some things have visibly changed
Most other things have really not
I'm on Quality Street at Bocky Boo's
Trying to enjoy an ice cream and coffee
While I'm counting 56 cars in 15 minutes

Some things have visibly changed
Most other things have really not
I'm on Quality Street at Bocky Boo's
Trying to enjoy an ice cream and coffee
While I'm counting 56 cars in 15 minutes
Crawling through the Laneway
Looking for that one elusive free car park
That is in front of everything
But none of them are actually stopping
They all come out the other end
Just driving through because they can
My ice cream tastes like diesel
And my ears are ringing from
All the rumbling engines and blaring rap
The next batch of City Elders
Is getting ready to take over
More of the same that hasn't been working
Maybe I'll come back in five or ten years
Once insanity is gone
And enlightenment has taken its place…

Foodstuffs Own Brands Ltd is recalling all batches and all dates of its six Pams brand berry products.
New Zealand has seen a surge of cases of Hepatitis A this year and 12 of those infected (including seven hospitalised) have been linked with the consumption of frozen berries.
The recall of Pams products is a precaution due to this possible link of Hepatitis A associated with berries sourced from Serbia.

Here's what you need to know:
- All batches and all dates of Pams Mixed Berries, Two Berry Mix, Smoothie Berry Mix, and Raspberries have been recalled and removed from supermarkets.
- The Pams products are sold at New World, PAK’nSAVE and Four Square stores nationwide.
- Hepatitis A is a contagious virus which spreads easily. Learn more here.
- Due to the possibility that other brands of berries may be infected, New Zealand Food Safety continues to advise those eating frozen berries to wash hands before and after preparing the berries, briefly boil them before eating and ensure cooking temperatures exceed 85 degree Celsius for 1 minute.

If you have consumed any of these products and have any concerns about your health, seek medical advice.

That's how you discuss Three Waters

An experimental 'deliberative democracy' process has been used by Watercare to get input from Aucklanders on future water sources, and it could provide a model for a more inclusive and equitable format for citizen participation.
The Newsroom article Citizen assemblies offer hope for democracy and climate change challenges describes how a diverse group of demographically representative Aucklanders has been working with Watercare to give a citizens' view on how the region’s water should be supplied in future decades.
Given that Watercare will become the largest part of the future "Northwater" Entity A, I'm hopeful that this process will be used more often in the future, to discuss, deliberate and decide the gnarly questions. It sure beats the social media wars and toxic narratives that we're engaging in at the moment.

'Abysmal' early voter turnout raises questions around approach to local elections

Yesterday (28-Sep 2022) RNZ published this article, which includes a few quotes from our outgoing mayor Sheryl Mai.
While I have now taken my ballot to the local WDC service centre, I almost didn't vote, either. The same old, stale, postal, minimalistic voting system, combined with less options, choices, votes and reliable information than ever, and a range of mostly uninspiring candidates, all of whom are opposing Three Waters (instead of jumping at the opportunity to offload an "unsexy" utility service, cash in on a job well done and invest in the future of our district), really put me off.
I'm worried that we will lose another three, maybe even six years due to pointless debate, council inaction and community apathy, and I'm wondering if we wouldn't be better off installing commissioners and getting done what we all know needs doing.
