What you need to know:
- Until 8:00am Tue 31 Oct there'll be periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria.
- Vince Cocurullo, Mayor of Whangārei, is asking people to drive carefully as the impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Lola continue to be felt.
- At least 6000 homes were left without power in Northland on Monday morning.
- Schools across Northland are closed on Monday as they cope with the power cuts and weather. These include Matauri Bay School, Whangaroa College, Kaeo School and Kaikohe Intermediate.
- In Northland, the Kaeo River has been also rising fast, according to Northland's regional council's webcams. If the river floods, it could overflow to State Highway 10.

Keep up to date with weather on the MetService website.

At 96, Logan Campbell resident Russell Parrish has achieved an incredible feat - ‘knocking off’ the summit of One Tree Hill 30 times over 30 consecutive days. Plus, it was all for a great cause — raising money and awareness for Alzheimer’s in honor of his late wife Mary.

Every single day of September, come rain, shine or blustering gale, Russell set off from his home at Ryman Healthcare’s Greenlane village to walk to the top of the iconic mountain set in the heart of Cornwall Park.

The idea also coincided with Ryman Healthcare’s annual Walking for Wellness challenge, which this year aptly had an Everest theme.

"We know the impacts from recent severe weather events but we also need to anticipate what future events may we have to grapple with" says Councillor Scott McKenzie.
“Some impacts of our changing climate are physical and obvious, and we are repairing, maintaining, and improving council-owned infrastructure as we work towards creating a more resilient District.”

We’re thinking deeply about how the district is going to be able to adapt to a changing climate and the strong consensus is that the plans must come from the grass roots, with collective buy in.

We’re looking for the nicest neighbours in town, and Pam Driver of Burswood has shared her lovely neighbours, David and Lara Hurst, saying they “are just wonderful”.

This year, Pam had a missing cat, which was quite out of character. Driver let the Hursts know, and they joined the search, successfully locating him in the gap between the ceiling and roof of their neighbour’s house.

Pam said “They rescued him and brought him home to me... complete with some scratches! I hate to think what would have happened had he not been found”.

Pam nominated the Hursts to let them know she is thankful for them: “It’s so good to know I have such caring neighbours who have my back. Thank you neighbours!”

Nominate someone in your hood, and your special neighbour could feature on Stuff and Neighbourly as an inspiration to us all (plus there are prizes to be won!).

Congratulations to local legend Karen Lee who has been nationally recognised as a "Tidy Kiwi of the Year" by Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB) this year.

Karen is the backbone of F.O.R.C.E (For Our Real Clean Environment) which organises the popular Love Whangarei Monthly Clean Up and the new Repair Cafe Whangārei. She also somehow juggles a full-time job and raising a toddler with her partner, Councillor Nicholas Connop.

Karen says the secret is to make it fun: "People motivate and encourage others and get encouraged and motivated in return. Anyone can take part - just start small and encourage others and you'll be amazed at the results."

KNZB says "The vision of F.O.R.C.E is to treat waste as a resource, and Karen lives and breathes that vision! Karen has a passion for reducing waste in the environment, and that passion inspires others to do better too." Anyone who has been to one of their clean-ups or the Repair Cafe will agree!

Thank you Karen and everyone who volunteers to keep Whangārei beautiful - we love the difference you make.
