A Message from the Pukenui Rangers ..

"Chris Humfrey (Kiwi) had done the work for us and removed his transmitter of his own accord which left us thinking that was the end of it. It turned out however that he was huddled up in a nearby burrow with Kama, neither being too impressed about being disturbed! They were pulled out, weighed, and put back in the burrow to continue doing their thing, an early sign of breeding activity I reckon!"

Thanks especially to Carl Dowd from Pataua North Landcare who has been helping out immensely in the forest in tracking kiwi and health checks. Shout out to Pukenui hard working rangers Ben Lovell and Bevan Cramp and Kiwi Namesake the real Chris Humfrey (human)

Have you been able to book a Covid-19 vaccine appointment?

Last week, Northland District Health Board decided to buck Ministry of Health recommendations and open up its vaccine clinics to all over-50s. But with 73,000 Northlanders in this age group, it has been overwhelmed with demand, receiving an average of 50 calls an hour and more than 2000 emails to book an appointment. Have you had the same problems, or have you been able to book a vaccine appointment?

New Zealand’s lush green pastures and temperate climate means our country produces some of the world’s best beef.

New Zealand is one of McDonald’s top ten beef-producing markets and it’s such a hit with the rest of the world that a significant percentage of NZ’s beef exports are to international McDonald’s markets.

We partner with many Kiwi farmers who produce our beef, including Whangara Farms which was the first beef farm outside of Europe to be invited to the McDonald’s Flagship Farmers programme.

ANZCO Foods, based in the small Taranaki town of Waitara, are responsible for making our 100% beef patties. About 90% of the staff at the Waitara plant are locals and they manage to produce around half a million patties each day.

Our quality beef cuts are minced and that’s it. No additives or fillers, just mince that is formed in patties, before they’re flash-frozen and sent to restaurants.

Power fully restored on Northpower network
A fault on high voltage equipment at Northpower’s Kensington substation caused an outage for over 28,000 customers at 4pm yesterday.
While the substation was out of operation, power was switched from other parts of Northpower’s electricity network to quickly restore most customers within an hour.
Around 8,000 customers in the Kamo and Hikurangi areas remained without power until around 9.45pm, when the power was fully restored to all customers.
“With the fault being on high voltage equipment in our largest regional substation, the impact was larger and the outage was longer than we usually deal with,” says Josie Boyd, Northpower Network General Manager.

“Customers who had their power restored earlier were asked to conserve power to ensure that higher than usual loads on some parts of the network could be managed. People did a great job of conserving enough energy to help us keep the power on where we could, so we thank them for that.
“The team at Northpower worked really hard to get the power back on and we would like to thank all those affected for their patience and understanding.”
Northpower apologises for the inconvenience and is investigating the cause of the fault.

Whangarei Police are appealing for witnesses to an aggravated robbery incident on Sunday 25th April where a physically-disabled man on a mobility scooter was assaulted and robbed by two cowardly offenders.
The victim was travelling on his mobility scooter at around midday on the cycle pathway near the intersection of Jack Street and Miro Street in Otangarei when he was approached by two unknown males who were holding planks of wood.
The males assaulted the victim, who is unable to verbally communicate and couldn’t call out for help.

He was knocked unconscious by the offenders who also stole cash from his wallet. The victim was able to eventually make his way home where he sent a text for an ambulance and was taken to hospital.
Police want to locate the males responsible for this serious incident.
The two males are described as teenagers of Maori ethnicity, one of whom was taller and slimmer in build than the other. One of the males also has a distinctive ginger stripe down the middle of his hair.
Police want to hear from any witnesses or anyone who may recognise the description of these males.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 105, quoting file 210426/9966 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
