If you are emailing me entries, please pay special attention to amended T&C number 5a.

Terms & Conditions (subject to change)
1. The organisers of this event are Murray Short & Barney Shiels-Reddin.

2. The organisers’ decision is final.

3. All submitted photos must be your own work, i.e. you must own the copyright to the image. You cannot submit photos on behalf of third parties.

4. You, the photographer, will retain the copyright to the photo. However, by submitting the photo for consideration/competition to be included in the Kāpiti Sunsets Calendar 2024 (hereafter called “the calendar”) you are agreeing to its use in the calendar free of charge and without any further financial reward. You are also agreeing to its use in any advertising or publicity materials for the calendar (in print or on-line), again, free of charge/without financial reward, even if the image is not selected for the calendar.

5. All photos must be in JPEG and landscape format. You must have an original file copy of at least 3500 pixels wide by 2500 pixels high. This approximates to A4 at 300 dpi, which is the size that the calendar will be printed. If your camera (or phone) is rated as 8.5 MP, or higher, your image should be large enough. Do not submit your full size file to this facebook submission page. facebook automatically crops to a maximum of about 1800 pixels wide. If your image is selected you will be asked to provide the full file version to the organisers.

5a (amended T&C) If you are submitting by email, please send either the original file (photo) from your camera or phone, or if you have edited it, your best quality version, preferably cropped to A4 dimensions at 300dpi. If you need technical assistance to do this, please contact me.

6. Photographs that appeared in the 2022 & 2023 Kāpiti Sunsets calendar are ineligible for this year’s competition but entries that didn’t make the final calendars are permissible.

7. “Brief” - All photos must be taken at or about sunset and must include at least a part of Kāpiti Island or be recognisably from or of Kāpiti Island or the Kāpiti Coast. Please keep filters and post production to a reasonable level. Images that have been modified to look like paintings will not be considered for the calendar. Colour images are preferred but black & white will be accepted. Recent photos are preferred, (e.g. within the past 3 years) but any age of photo is acceptable. Please include the date and place from which the photo was taken, as well as your contact details (on initial submission your facebook username is sufficient).

8. The closing date for submissions will be midnight on Thursday 31 August.

9. You may enter up to three photographs but only one per date taken.

10. Once you have submitted three images that have been accepted you cannot change them. (Tip: If you think you might get a winning shot in the last few days of August, hold one entry back for a deadline submission).

10a (amended T&C) Once you have submitted 3 images, you can add an additional 2 images provided they have been taken during August 2023.

11. There will only be a general category this year.

12. The organisers reserve the right to exclude any submission for any reason, for example (but not limited to), not including Kāpiti Island or the Kāpiti Coast, not being a sunset image, poor image quality, offensive material, political content, advertising material, etc. The most common reason for rejection over the past two years has been the image not being “landscape” mode. Although a brief statement of the reason for exclusion may be supplied, the organisers will not enter into any correspondence regarding unsuccessful submissions.

13. All eligible entries will be included on a new “open” facebook page and presented for “The People’s Choice” selection, to be determined by the most “likes”. This voting page will be open for a specified period of approximately 7 – 10 days and be will opened for voting within 7 days of the initial submission closing date. Voting will be “open”, i.e. you will not need to be a group member to vote.

14. The 12 calendar pages will (if possible) be from 12 different photographers. As the principal organiser, I am reserving one page for one of my photographs. The remaining 11 calendar pages will be the highest ranked photograph from the top 11 ranked photographers. In the unlikely event that there are insufficient photographs of sufficient quality to fill the calendar with 12 different photographers, the organiser reserves the right to select second or third photographs from the highest ranked photographer(s). The organisers also reserve the right to exercise a degree of editorial control to ensure that the calendar contains a variety of images rather than multiple submissions of the same “superlative” sunset.

15. The selected images will be included in the Kāpiti Sunsets Calendar 2023, along with a photo credit and a free copy of the calendar. No other prize is included in this competition/selection process.

16. The organisers reserve the right to make minor modifications to the selected images that they deem necessary (e.g. cropping to size for printing).

17. In the event of there being any issues not covered by these terms & conditions, T&Cs number 2 applies!

The leader of the National Party has announced a plan to ban cellphones from all classrooms to minimize distractions for students. The Labour party has commented that this is commonplace already and is a decision best left for individual schools. Do you think a ban should be enforced?

Kia ora Kāpiti, a deeper look into the sinkhole discovered at Matthews Park last week has revealed more widespread damage. This means the impacted sports field will be closed for the foreseeable future while we plan and complete repairs.

The timing of any repair will depend on the option chosen and ground conditions – we’ll need it to dry out before starting work. As suspected the issue is caused by the collapse of a disused stormwater pipe. Our teams are still assessing the extent of the damage but so far there are several areas along its line showing signs of dropping.
Until we can get things fixed:

⚠️ please steer clear of the area, which we’ve taped off – sinkholes can be unpredictable and prone to further collapse

⚠️ if you’re visiting the park, please follow the direction of our signage

⚠️ no bookings for this field will be accepted while it's closed.

A BBC RADIO 2 BOOK CLUB CHOICE 2019

'This is a novel of international significance. Courageous, provocative, haunting, it will open our eyes' Heather Morris, author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz

In the midst of war, he found love
In the midst of darkness, he found courage
In the midst of tragedy, he found hope

The Beekeeper of Aleppo

What will you find from his story?

Nuri is a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo - until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape.

As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss, but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all - and perhaps this is the hardest thing they face - they must journey to find each other again.

Moving, powerful, compassionate and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Told with deceptive simplicity, it is the kind of book that reminds us of the power of storytelling.

'This book dips below the deafening headlines, and tells a true story with subtlety and power' Esther Freud

'This compelling tale had me gripped with its compassion, its sensual style and its onward and lively urge for resolution' Daljit Nagra

'Christy Lefteri has crafted a beautiful novel, intelligent, thoughtful; and relevant. I'm recommending this book to everyone I care about. So I'm recommending this book to you' Benjamin Zephaniah

Synopsis:
A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2018

Shakespeare’s dark and tragic play retold in a heart-pounding New York Times bestselling thriller from the author of The Snowman and The Thirst.

Set in the 1970s in a run-down, rainy industrial town, Jo Nesbo's Macbeth centers around a police force struggling to shed an incessant drug problem. Duncan, chief of police, is idealistic and visionary, a dream to the townspeople but a nightmare for criminals. The drug trade is ruled by two drug lords, one of whom—a master of manipulation named Hecate—has connections with the highest in power, and plans to use them to get his way.

Hecate’s plot hinges on steadily, insidiously manipulating Inspector Macbeth: the head of SWAT and a man already susceptible to violent and paranoid tendencies. What follows is an unputdownable story of love and guilt, political ambition, and greed for more, exploring the darkest corners of human nature, and the aspirations of the criminal mind.
About the Author:
JO NESBO is a musician, songwriter, and economist, as well as a writer. His Harry Hole novels include The Snowman, The Leopard, and Phantom and he is the author of several stand-alone novels, including The Son, as well as the Doctor Proctor series of children's books. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Glass Key for best Nordic crime novel

Synopsis:
In the blustery final days of 2007, seven characters will reach an unexpected turning point: a hedge fund manager pulling off a trade, a professional football player recently arrived from Poland, a young lawyer with too much time on his hands, a student led astray by Islamist theory, a hack book reviewer, a schoolboy hooked on pot and reality TV, and a Tube train driver whose Circle Line train joins these lives in a daily loop. And as the novel moves to its gripping climax, they are forced, one by one, to confront the new world they inhabit.

Panoramic and masterful, A Week in December melds moral heft and piercing wit, holding a mirror up to the complex patterns and crossings of modern urban life.
