National Volunteer Week Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu honours the collective energies and mana of all volunteers in Aotearoa. They grow our people, open minds, open hearts and create joy.

More than 1million people across Aotearoa say they volunteer for an organisation, contributing $4billion to the economy. Much more happens within communities and between people, and increasingly, in different ways.

The landscape of volunteering is changing, in some cases exacerbating the changes we were already seeing, in others creating another shift entirely. Change presents different challenges across the sector, but also highlights unique opportunities for reshaping and improving the practice of volunteering. Volunteering New Zealand continues to develop its expertise in acting as the champion of mahi aroha.

National Volunteer Week 2021 runs from June 20-26. This year’s theme is ‘Recognise, Connect, Reimagine’. Join us this National Volunteer Week to share stories of volunteering, and help reshape mahi aroha for the future.

The Demise of Alexander Road

Michael from Trentham

Not long ago Alexander Road, Trentham/Wallaceville was a quick way to get from Silverstream/Pinehaven to the Upper Hutt CBD and beyond: 80km and a straight road.
Then came a roundabout one third into it when heading north to slow things up.
But wait there is more to come just around the corner.

But wait there is more to come just around the corner.

Soon there will be four traffic-slowing roundabouts and at least one T intersection. And with it the speed limit will surely be reduced to 60km or even 50km.

I suppose it won't get as gay as the times not all that long ago when a vehicle had to have a person walking in front of it as a safety measure.

This weeks SPCA Pet of the Day is Scarlett the cat.

"I have come such a long way from the scared frightened little kitten found on a farm with my sister. I am now looking for a wonderful home where I can continue learning about this big wide world.
I will be quite worried in a new environment, so I will need an understanding family who is willing to give me the time to adjust. I would benefit from someone being around for parts of the day or another like-minded cat for company. I try to be brave and once I know you, I will really enjoy your company. I will just need time to get to know you. I really love the attention I get from my caregivers, so I know that in time, I will get to really appreciate you too."

Whittaker’s has turned the chocolate world upside down with its new innovative new Peanut Butter and Jelly 250g Block.
Whittaker’s co-chief operating officer, Holly Whittaker, says having more than one filling in a block is a first for Whittaker’s and something a bit different from the way other chocolate flavour combinations are produced.
Recently named the Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Brand for the tenth consecutive year, Whittaker’s also celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. It will be available for a limited time only in supermarkets nationwide from Monday June 21.
Are you going to try it and are there any other flavours you would like to see combined into one block?

We also chat with Dr Doug Wilson, 2021 Senior New Zealander of the Year Te Mātāpuputu o te Tau, and Andrea Gaskin, Director and Founder of charity organisation Connect the Dots, about how she’s making the art scene in Auckland accessible to seniors.

There’s advice on how to eat healthy, how to get tech savvy, and updated laws for renters and landlords.

Oh well, it wasn"t that many years ago when in urban areas, a person had to walk in front of a moving vehicle with a flag to warn people on foot of an approaching monster.
