I live next to a park, which is increasing in popularity capped with a growing population. Every day at least one child falls off a bike or scooter while riding along the footpath. And which area of their body is most likely at the receiving end - their knees of course.
There is pain, crying, tears, bruises and sometimes blood.
What to do as a preventative measure? Knee pads of course. The kind kids use for skate boarding.

My wife disagrees. Who would wear them? They get in the way if they want to visit the playground and wearing knee pads would interfere in riding a bike riding she says.

Someone or some people are responsible inside and/or connected with the Upper Hutt City Council for the state of affairs that currently point to an infrastructure fallout.

Whilst millions and millions of dollars from rates have gone on sports facilities and an upgraded public swimming pool we didn't really need/could do without, our basic water supply to residents is drying up and draining away from a pipe system that has been in a dire state for years and years.

Has any councillor including Mayor and Deputy Mayor past and present alerted the city and us in the city to this and thus opposed any major non-emergency undertakings by Council?

Has any staff person or Council-contracted company or individual made serious overtures to the mayor and his Councillors over the years as to the state of play as the Council ticked-off another non-urgent, not really required amenity completed or on its way to construction?

Mayor Wayne Guppy seemed genuinely shocked that Upper Hutt is the worse-off area in the region for a leaking water supply system in a region that is harbouring such a severely serious and expensive issue. At first - only a couple of months age - Guppy just wouldn't accept the assessment.

Meanwhile a 24/7 water leak in busy Ward Street which went unfixed for almost 4 months, has now been seemingly repaired. Perhaps it was just a faulty or disintegrated toby.

Heads should roll over this.

Cara Talbot has nominated her neighbours, James and Amy Bolton of Forrest Hill (featured below), as a Neighbourly Nice Neighbour. Cara shares:

"I’m a single working mum and life is a juggle! However James and Amy are always offering to help when needed. They are just the type of couple that don't wait to be asked for help. Amy is forever helping to look after my dog when I’m at work or helping to get my kids to after school activities. James will come over and help me put up the kids temporary pool, do my lawn edges or take runs to the tip when I’m having a clear out. Always with a smile when I know they are busy parents themselves.

In addition to the many times they've helped me out personally, in the recent flooding in the Forrest Hill area, it was Amy that rang around her network and rallied a number of our families (and kids) to come and help affected neighbours to clear out their flooded homes and generally clean up once the waters had died down. I know she helped man a support area in the local community down in Milford shopping centre which provides support and goods to families hit hard. She's also the Chair of the Forrest Hill Primary School - she's just an all-around good sort who is very community-minded. James works for the Police and I know he's been up to the local school more than once to help educate our kids about what the police do and how to stay safe.

James and Amy are very humble, but I do really think they are some of the great unsung heroes that make our north shore community so special. I feel very blessed they are part of my adopted whānau!"
