There is also loft space above the lounge area which is used for storage, but could also be converted to a sleeping area for guests. Further storage under the stairs and there is a loft area adjacent to the bed which would accommodate bedroom furniture, such as two lowboys or similar. The house is warm and comfortable with ceiling and underfloor insulation. It has solar lighting, gas hot water, cooking and heating. There is also a small inverter for laptops and enough solar power to run a small television. Weekly outgoings are minimal, e.g. around $10 for gas.
Currently located on a lifestyle block in Waikanae, the house has a very pleasant rural outlook, with a sunny aspect and lambs grazing outside. Connected to town water supply. Pharmacist Raewyn Richardson said the incident began at 6pm on Wednesday night when a man collapsed on the footpath.
A number of businesses near the cordon are closed, but are expected to open later in the day. Police are expected to make a statement about the situation later on Thursday.
