Our changing climate poses risks to our natural and built environments. Swiss Re in a global analysis of insurance risk said to “expect climate risks to raise global property premiums by 33-41% between 2020 and 2040”. The potential increase was deemed a direct consequence of our changing climate.

SPECIAL SCREENING of Briar Grace-Smith's film 'COUSINS'
at Te Raukura ki Kāpiti
Saturday 23 October, 5pm

Based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Patricia Grace, the film follows the journeys of three cousins in their lifelong search for each other. “Cousins is a story about strength and resilience, touching on epic events in the history of Aotearoa ... however, at its heart it is an intimate story, about the theft of a child and her family's lifelong quest to bring her back home to her people," says Grace-Smith.

This is a one-off, final-push fundraiser for our building redevelopment project. All proceeds from ticket sales will go toward this project.

The event will be held under Covid levels one or two, with social distancing and Covid safety measures in place. Tickets may therefore be limited, so booking is essential. Bar service will be available and a refreshment is included in the ticket price.

TICKETS: $30 - available through Eventfinda online; by calling 0800 BUY TIX (0800 289 849); or at the Coastlands Information Desk.

Thanks to Te Raukura ki Kāpiti for their support.

Join the rest of the motu on October 28 by taking part in our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi, ShakeOut. Signing up only takes 2 minutes and when you do, you’ll be entered to win a personal emergency grab bag or civil defence wheelie bin kit from NZ Civil Defence.
ShakeOut takes place around the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake:

DROP - down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to.

COVER - your head and neck (or entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you). If there is no shelter nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

HOLD - on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it.

Head to www.shakeout.govt.nz... to sign up today and get involved!

It’s called Plan Change 47 and has three distinct areas of focus: the Wellington Fault, Mangaroa Peatlands and areas of High Slope Hazards.

The proposed changes impact some properties in Upper Hutt. For example, the location of the Wellington Fault is now better understood and the location and extent has changed in some areas.

We want to give you a heads up about what's being proposed, ahead of a formal Plan Change in 2022.

Letters have been sent to impacted landowners with all the details. The information is also available online at letskorero.upperhuttcity.com/pc47
