People are being warned to stay away from a Wairarapa river which has a "severe" toxic algae bloom.

People are being warned to stay away from a Wairarapa river which has a "severe" toxic algae bloom.

Sections of the Waipoua River are "100 per cent" covered with algae and sections of the river also have algal mats building on the river margins. The algae is highly toxic and can kill dogs and young children if digested.

Toxic algae has also been detected in Upper Hutt and dog owners across the region are being advised to stay alert. Click here for more advice and information.

Come along to one of our drop-in sessions this week at the Wainuiomata Intermediate School hall to share your experiences and check out the flood hazard maps.

These will be held on:
• Thursday 5 December from 6pm - 8pm
• Saturday 7 December from 2pm - 4pm
