Taupō artist Connie Takarangi is launching an exhibition full of colour and recycled objects, textiles, paper and more at Taupō Museum next weekend.

The exhibition, Colour My Autumn, has been a labour of love for Takarangi, who regards autumn as the most beautiful time of year. She was born and bred in Turangi before moving to Wellington and then London, before returning home. She said the beautiful colours of Turangi in autumn influenced her love of the season.

“For as long as I can remember I have had a fascination of autumn and its changing elements,” she said.

She said Colour My Autumn brought together elements that embraced her passion for reusing, recycling, repurposing and rethinking.

Colour My Autumn runs from April 6 to May 13 at Taupō Museum. Taupō District residents and children can visit free of charge.

Takarangi is also holding school holiday workshops during the upcoming school holidays with funding from Creative Taupō and the Creative Communities Scheme. See the Taupō Library and Museum school holiday programme for more information.

Taupō District Council has been nationally recognised for its efforts during a project around the 10th Anniversary Celebrations for the Suzhou and Taupō Sister City relationship.

The project won runner-up in the Best Local Government Project for its museum exhibition and schools programme that celebrated 10 years of the Sister City friendship.

Council representatives were presented with the award at New Zealand’s annual Sister Cities conference in Palmerston North on March 22. The museum exhibition, Suzhou – Faith and Life 618AD-1279AD, ran from September to November and over 5000 people visited and a schools programme ran alongside it.

Head of economic development and business transformation John Ridd said it was fantastic for the council to be recognised for a project of this scale that had far reaching benefits.

The compliance team’s resident pooch is being groomed for stardom in the Taupō District – with the energetic pup to become the district’s first dedicated education dog.

Poppy, a Hungarian vizsla/heading dog cross, was brought to the pound by a hunting dog breeder who did not need her but wanted her in safe hands. Instead of adopting her out, the compliance team decided to keep the little bundle of energy with a view to turning her into an education dog. She has just turned one, and has plenty more training to undergo before she is taken to preschools, schools and community groups for her future work.

Poundkeeper Craig O’Leary said Poppy was a happy, energetic and curious young dog who was a delightful addition to the team.

“Her natural herding ability means she is always trying to get the cat to do what she wants,” he laughed.
