After looking carefully at the Government’s controversial Three Waters proposal and surveying its community, Taupō District Council is requesting an immediate stop to the Three Waters Reform programme.

In its submission to the Government unanimously approved today by the mayor and councillors, Council stressed the need for the reform to pause, and be linked with the Resource Management Act and Future for Local Government reviews.

Mayor David Trewavas said while Council agreed that some change in the Three Waters area was necessary in the future due to rising costs and environmental standards, it was not convinced, based on the information provided to Council to date, that the Government’s proposals were the right outcome for the Taupō District.

Here at Neighbourhood Support we know first hand that communities that stay connected and prepared fare better in emergencies and natural disasters than those without a plan.

For the month of October, we want to see how you tackle emergency preparedness. From getting first aid training and stocking up on essentials to putting together a grab n’ go bag or working with your neighbours to create a neighbourhood resillience plan, a little bit of planning goes a long way to make sure you and your community can get through any situation. Joining or setting up a Neighbourhood Support group is a great way to keep in touch and work together to reach out, look out and help out one another no matter what life may bring.

Don’t forget! This month also coincides with New Zealand’s national earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi, ShakeOut, which will be taking place on Thursday, October 28th at 9:30am.

Let us know how you’re getting prepared this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to: info@neighbourhoodsupport.co.nz

Taupō District Mayor David Trewavas has welcomed today’s announcement from IRONMAN confirming the Taupō District will host the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in 2024.

Taupō District was originally set to host the 2020 and then 2022 edition, prior to the event cancellations due to the ongoing impacts of Covid-19.

Mayor Trewavas said he was excited to secure the new date for the world championships to be held on December 14 and 15, 2024.

“We are proud to be the home of IRONMAN in New Zealand and are ready to show the rest of the world exactly why that is. We have been working closely with stakeholders and are very pleased to see both council and government support roll over to the new date.

The event is expected to bring in $27 million for the district, with a significant amount of that contribution due to the number of international athletes and spectators expected to attend.

“We have already laid the foundations to host the world’s best, and we can’t wait to deliver an event like no other, allowing us to showcase both the Taupō District and New Zealand to the rest of the world. Bring on 2024.”
