Waikato competition goes in search of the best cheese toastie

Hi Waikato,

Would you pay $40 for a cheese toastie?

You might do if it came with a lobster tail sat between a golden Volare brioche, buffalo mozzarella, crayfish oil and crispy Vandy bacon crumbs.

The dish is just one of many over 30 Waikato's chefs have let their creative minds run wild for during this year's Meyer Cheese Melt Challenge.

The competition, which sees a reimagining of the classic cheese toastie, is back for its second year and the entries are crazier than ever.

Ron Thomassen has been announced as the new chairman of the King Country Rugby Union.
He replaces outgoing chairman Ivan Haines who will remain on the union’s board.
Thomassen, who runs Thomassen Logging Ltd, has been active in the local rugby and business community for many years, said KCRFU rugby manager Josh Standen.

“Ron has sat on numerous other boards and committees in the wider Taupō area through this time and has been on the KCRFU board for the past five years.”

Thomassen played rugby in his day in Putaruru, said Standen, and his son, Ben is currently pursuing rugby in Canterbury.

The union was still on the hunt for a new general manager, he said, at a presentation of two new Hilux SR Prerunners at Taupō Toyota on Friday (July 10) morning.

The vehicles, purchased by the union and serviced free by the business, would allow him and operations manager Kurt McQuilkin to get around the area they had to cover, including the union’s significant rural heartland.

Poll: Should Kiwis be entitled to more sick leave?

The Team Reporter from Stuff

With Covid-19 still a very real risk, people who are unwell are told to stay home, and to keep any sickly kids home too - but what if you don't have any more sick leave owing?

Most Kiwis are entitled to five days of sick leave a year, but some - often those in lower paid jobs - get less.

Most Kiwis are entitled to five days of sick leave a year, but some - often those in lower paid jobs - get less.

New Zealand’s minimum sick leave allowance is one of the lowest in the OECD. In Australia they get 10 days, in most European countries it’s even more.
