Hi neighbours - Taupō's Garry McCarthy has spent his working life in power stations, and has now applied his technical expertise to slashing his power bill.

His bill for July was $22.25, and was as low as $14 in summer. He installed eight PV panels on the roof, double-glazing, upgraded the log fire which has a wetback, and only uses LED energy efficient bulbs. He even bounces the light from a stand of small five watt lamps off the white ceiling instead of using ceiling lights.

What tips and tricks do you use to keep your power bill at a minimum?

The intersection of Kiddle Drive, Arrowsmith Avenue and Napier Road is about to be changed to make it safer for school children, cyclists, pedestrians and cars.

The new design will give traffic travelling on Kiddle Drive and Arrowsmith Avenue the right of way, with vehicles on Napier Road required to stop. There will also be cycle lanes, new road signage, new turning lanes and other safety improvements added.

Head of operations Kevin Strongman said the council had heard residents concerns about the high crash rate at the intersection and had worked with traffic specialists to design a solution that made safety the number one priority.

The existing layout of the intersection had caused traffic problems over the past two decades. It was named one of New Zealand Transport Agency’s top 10 crash sites in 2009, before it was handed over to the council as part of the East Taupō Arterial rearrangement. The $120,000 cost of the redesign will be fully funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

We asked some experts how to stop minor irritations turning into something more serious, and who you can you turn to if things start to get out of hand - because being better neighbours can only have a positive impact on the quality of our communities, and who wouldn't want that :)

Tour-Makers and Twist Productions present A Doll’s House, by Emily Perkins, based on Ibsen’s original, directed by Katherine McRae.

Cleverly exposing the dynamics within a marriage, the New Zealand adaptation of the classic play by Norway's Henrik Ibsen, A Doll’s House, is set to make its Hamilton debut – playing for one night only at Clarence Street Theatre on Saturday 14th September.

Celebrated New Zealand writer Emily Perkins has created a masterpiece in her first work for the stage, exploring the social straitjackets we find ourselves in, and revealing how much – or how little – has changed since the Ibsen original premiered in 1879, with both being acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.

This production stars Sophie Hambleton, best known for her role as Carol O’Driscoll in TV3’s Westside.
