A 64 YEAR-OLD MEMORY:

Paul from Levin

The scene from the window of a bus, 64 years ago in Tokyo. Not at all like Napier!

I was living and working in Napier. I was invited to participate in a variety of activities first in Japan, then in various S E Asian countries and Australia. I was the sole passenger in a Japanese log freighter and I first set foot on Japanese soil at a small and relatively isolated port town on the Japan Sea coast. Japan appeared to have no resemblances to Napier, nor to my previous home, Auckland. Eye-opening and life-changing experiences lay ahead. I bought a camera and this was one of the first photos I took with it, possibly the first.
