Speed limits on at least five stretches of Canterbury highway could be lowered following a review by the NZ Transport Agency.

Sections of highway to be reviewed are SH73 from West Melton to Buchanans Rd, SH1 at Winchester and Glenavy, and SH8 at Burkes Pass and Tekapo.

Firefighters spent more than four hours battling a fire at a house in North Canterbury overnight.

The fire happened at a property on Dover St, Leithfield, about 42 kilometres north of Christchurch, at 11.30pm on Friday.
