Sunset Primary School briefly in lockdown due to armed man
Hi neighbours,
Sunset Primary School was briefly put in lockdown while armed police went through the school in search of a man who was reportedly armed.
Police received a call reporting a man seen walking a dog who appeared to have a gun around the Sunset Rd area on Thursday.
"Someone saw what they thought was a gun but they didn't hear a bang," Senior Sergeant Malcolm Collins of Bay of Plenty police said.
"He was walking through the school - went in one side and out the other."
Collins said armed police responded, as they do with any report of a gun, and went through the school in search of the man.
Sunset Primary School went into lockdown while this happened, with teachers keeping children inside while police went through.
Police are no longer there.
Collins said police were still believed to be looking for the man - described as a Maori man wearing brown pants and a black hoodie.
He was walking a brown, white-faced dog.
It was not known if he had a weapon on him, Collins said.
If anyone has seen the man they are asked to contact Rotorua Police on 07 07-349 9400. Information can also be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?
As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙
One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.
So we want to hear what you think:
