After the summer break Mapua's popular movies are coming back. On Sunday 14/3 the movie St. Vincent will be screened at the Packhouse Cinema in the Mapua Community Hall.

Chemistry can make all the difference in a film, St. Vincent wasn't a great film because the story was out of this world. In fact, it wasn't even all that original, but the fantastic chemistry between veteran Bill Murray, and newcomer Jaeden Lieberher makes all the difference.

After a bitter divorce, Maggie & Oliver have been forced to move to a new neighbourhood, where they find their new neighbour is a bitter old drunk named Vincent (Murray).

Vincent wants nothing to do with anyone, until chance throws him together with Oliver, who he reluctantly agrees to watch in exchange for money.

But what does he know about taking care of a kid? Vincent splits his time between the bars, the horse track and the strip club, running up long tabs at each of those splendid establishments.

When his harried new neighbour begs him to watch her son after school, he sees no reason why he shouldn’t drag Oliver along on his normal daily routine, serving as sort of a shit-faced Mr. Miyagi to the kid, who’s getting picked on by the little hellions at his new Catholic school.

Instead of showing Oliver “The crane,” Vincent teaches him how to break a bully’s nose, and the next day in dodgeball, the lad puts his lesson to use.

I always enjoy seeing how young actors and actresses got their start, and this film stars Bill freaking Murray, need I say more?

The movie starts at 6:30pm, doors open at 6:15. Bring your own chair, nibbles and drinks and enjoy a drink or a snack at the Sprig and Fern opposite the hall.

Hi folks,
My colleague Jo is writing a story about buying by tender, specifically, the new trend of writing letters to the vendor to explain why they should pick your offer over all the rest.
As the market gets harder and harder to break into, we've been hearing more and more about people trying to make a personal connection with vendors to give their tender offers the edge. We've heard folks will include personal details about their family, why the love the house and what their plans for the property are.
Jo would love to talk to anyone who's written a letter like this to accompany a tender - perhaps it's you, perhaps a relative or friend - or from vendors who've received letters like this, accompanying a tender.
Perhaps you asked for such letters?
We'd love to hear more about that experience for you and how it shaped the way the sale went.
You can reach out to jo here (she'll be joining the Neighbourly neighbourhood soon!) or via our email: homed@stuff.co.nz.
Looking forward to hearing your stories.

I would still be happy our one being in it, but it just made more sense to move him up into the one his brother had vacated! It’s a really good make, very heavy, bought at baby on the move for $600 plus I seem to recall. They still stock them. Think I can find the fitting instructions manual I got with it. But if not, I’m pretty sure if you are regular at baby on the move that they would be happy to help. Pick up is in Stoke. PM me if you wish to come and pick it up.

A Tsunami Warning has been issued following the M8.0 earthquake north-east of New Zealand near KERMADEC ISLANDS REGION.
People near coast from BAY OF ISLANDS to WHANGAREI including GREAT BARRIER ISLAND and from MATATA to TOLAGA BAY must MOVE IMMEDIATELY to nearest high ground, out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible. Evacuate these areas even if you did not feel the earthquake. DO NOT WAIT. A damaging tsunami is possible.

People in all other areas who felt a LONG or STRONG earthquake should MOVE IMMEDIATELY to the nearest high ground, out of tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible.

This evacuation advice overrides the current COVID-19 Alert Level requirements. Do not stay at home. MOVE IMMEDIATELY. Stay 2 metres away from others if you can and if it is safe to do so.

People evacuating should walk, run or cycle if possible to reduce chance of getting stuck in traffic. Do not return until all-clear is given by Civil Defence.

Go to www.civildefence.govt.nz... for the most up to date information.

Guillotine for paper cutting wanted

Karin from Upper Moutere

Hi,
our pottery club is looking for a so called guillotine to cut A4 sheets of paper. Ideally it should cut up to 10 sheets but less is fine, too. And hopefully it's not too blunt...
But anything will be considered. It must fit A4 though. Am happy to pay a fair price!
Thanks in advance.
