Our charity has been operating throughout all levels of Covid-19 and have been super busy!

Our volunteers are feeling a bit frazzled as we have already surpassed the volumes of food collected in the previous financial year within 6.5 months of this financial year.

We are pleased to announce we have 2 new board members join our governance team.

I would like to introduce you to John and Victoria.

John is from Countdown and runs Countdown Johnsonville. We first worked with John when he ran Countdown Tawa over 5 years ago. He brings a wealth of knowledge from the food industry.

Victoria is from Foodstuffs North Island. Victoria and her husband John own New World Porirua. Victoria and John have been assisting KCA for the past 17 months. Victoria brings HR and health and safety experience with her.

We hope to have some exciting fundraising events in 2021 once recharge our batteries and get through this very interesting year.

Due to the housing crisis we are not collecting furniture and whiteware but are still accepting kids reading books, shoes, clothing, microwaves all in clean used good condition. It would be appreciated if items donated are still fit for purpose as they are passed on for free to clients working with our 74 partner agencies.

If you require food assistance, please go to your nearest foodbanks. KCA is a distribution hub to other agencies and groups. We don't work directly with the end recipients.

Trish Hina could be the greatest sportswoman you have never heard of.
A product of Naenae College, she later settled in Gisborne, where she was a social worker.
Her sporting CV includes representing New Zealand in touch, softball, rugby and rugby league.
Initially, her sporting success came in softball, playing for New Zealand and helping her club and Hutt Valley win numerous titles.
League was however her first love and in 2000 Hina was named MVP at the first women’s World Cup, where New Zealand beat Great Britain 26-4.
She was prominent in the Kiwi Ferns retaining the World Cup in 2005 and 2008.
In the 2008 defence, Hina was named MVP for a second time. In the final, New Zealand thrashed Australia 34-0, with Hina scoring two tries and kicking three conversions.
In 2010, she achieved arguably her greatest achievement by being selected to play for the Black Ferns at the World Cup.
She became the first female to win rugby and league World Cups.
Towards the end of her career, Hina was diagnosed with kidney disease and she was unable to fulfill her dream of playing Sevens at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
In 2015, she was inducted as a Hutt Valley Sports Awards legend.

This week we feature a kererū couple, photographed by Louise Thomas in Lower Hutt.
This is what she wrote about her picture.

"It was both beautiful and sobering coming across a nesting kereru (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae), aka wood pigeon, couple yesterday - I was following a grey warbler at the time. They had set up their twiggy nest in the crown of a punga tree.
The couple were so intensely private I felt like an atheist that had accidentally stumbled into a church or a mosque - big and bumbling and out of place, but in awe and still having a grotesque fascination for the stain-glass windows. I took my photos and quietly left."

Bevis, a resident at Ryman’s Anthony Wilding Village, recently received a gentleman’s makeover. The day began at the barbershop where Bevis and his barber Kohl shared plenty of laughs. Next up, a personal stylist helped Bevis select clothes he looked and felt great in. Being pampered isn’t the norm for Bevis but based on his smile, we’re confident he loved every minute.

Hi team! Thank you so much for your support of First Rung, our first podcast!
The launch last week went even better than we'd hoped. I'm over the moon.
I thought I'd drop by to let you know this week's episode, Location, Location, Location, is out now.
Just like the first one, it's packed with tips, advice and anecdotes from experts and home owners on every aspect of buying your first home. It also comes with a chance to win a $500 Resene prize pack.
In episode 2, we talk to a first time buyer who moved from one end of the country to the other for a chance to get on the ladder, hear about apartments as a viable first home option and an expert gives us some tips on how to choose the right lawyer.
We all know buying a home is one of the toughest, most daunting things we might ever do as adults, so it doesn't hurt to get some expert advice and support. That's what we wanted to give you with First Rung.
Give episode 2 a listen and let us know what you think - and I hope you're all in to win that crackin' prize pack!
