When the Grand Traverse rolls around on 2 April, it will mark 18 years since the event began.
This year participants can also choose to enter in a 13km mountain bike fun ride – a great intro to the sport for rookies, families and children aged 7 and over.
Event organiser Michael Jacques says the new fun ride is an opportunity to get more people involved in the Grand Traverse, especially as there is growing interest in mountain biking among young people in the region.
Entries are now open – for more information and to register, visit poriruagrandtraverse.co.nz

He is of Cambodian-Chinese extraction and has married into Maoridom, which has given him a particular view of the world.
Simon describes himself as a serial entrepreneur. His two main businesses at present are Easybuild Homes and Concept Solutions. Easybuild supplies part-prefabricated houses from its Upper Hutt factory. A home can be onsite in 8-9 weeks, and
Simon says costs are more predictable and stable with this system.
Concept Solutions is an energy company specialising in solar/battery systems, especially in ‘cluster’ situations where several dwellings share their energy production and take-off. This idea already exists in Europe and it is claimed that it results in efficiency and robustness of supply.
Simon has put together a vision which encompasses groups of low-cost homes, shared energy supply, and the needs of Maori and Pasifika communities, who often have multi-generational living arrangements. Furthermore, Iwi often have land where the ownership is shared and cannot easily be used as collateral for investment.
Simon points out that the concept might also be used as an alternative to the retirement village.
A most interesting talk and possibly a peek into the future.

Let's celebrate Women's History month as well as International Women's Day (this Wednesday) by sharing some of the lesser-known, inspiring women who've played a part in New Zealand's history.

But white sugar is 100% sugars (50% fructose and 50% glucose), while raw honey is about 85% sugars with fructose and glucose ratios that vary with each honey variety. The remaining 15% of honey is water, pollen and trace nutrients. Because of this different makeup, white sugar is absorbed into the body and blood at a faster rate than honey. Sugar absorption is measured by the glycemic index (GI). White sugar has a GI of 65, while most floral varieties of raw honey have a GI that ranges from 35 to 55. This means that raw honey will provide more even levels of energy, over a longer period of time, as compared to white sugar. Generally, raw honey with a higher percentage of fructose as compared to glucose will have a lower glycemic index.
Have you ever heard the phrase: "White sugar is empty calories?" That's because white sugar contains sugars and nothing else. But raw honey contains additional nutrients, including amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. These phytochemicals have anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-oxidant properties which can contribute to a stronger immune system and better health and wellness.
