This memorial is in fact 'The Tunneller's Memorial' errected with great determination, care and reverence to remember the members of the New Zealand Tunnelling Company who served on the Western Front in WWI, many of them came from the mining industry in Waihi but also from other mines around New Zealand. These tunnellers were involved in many battles on the Western Front and endured much hardship during their service in the Great War and some did not return to NZ. It would have been nice if the HH had named this memorial correctly. Thank You, D. Frost, Thames
