Toxic algae warning
There is an amber alert for both the Waikanae River (from Jim Cooke Park to the coast) and the Ōtaki River (from SH1 to the coast.) Swimmers are advised to check for toxic algae and avoid swimming if present, particularly if detached velvety mats have washed up on the river's edge.
Children and dogs should be kept away from the affected areas.
