On Monday, 21 November, the Supreme Court ruled that preventing 16 and 17-year-olds from voting is 'unjustified age discrimination'.

The current age of voting is 18 in New Zealand and lobby group Make It 16 have been running a youth-led campaign advocating for the vote to be extended to our 16 and 17-year-olds.

“This is history,” said Make It 16 co-director Caeden Tipler. “Today New Zealand’s highest court has confirmed that stopping young people from voting is a breach of our human rights...The government and Parliament cannot ignore such a clear legal and moral message. They must let us vote.”

Share your thoughts below - these may be published in the We Say You Say column of the local papers.

Be careful if you're near the coastline tomorrow, Kāpiti, as MetService New Zealand have issued a Heavy Swell Warning from 6am 23 November to 6pm 24 November.

⚠️ What should you do?
- be careful when walking and driving along roads directly exposed to the sea during this time
- live in an exposed coastal area? Park your vehicles away from the seaward side of the road and be prepared for surface flooding, debris impact in wave runup and deposition of driftwood, seaweed, sand and gravel
- check the forecast before heading out on a boat, and if in doubt, do not go.

Kia ora Kāpiti, our Building Inspections team has been the latest to be affected by COVID-19 and other illnesses.
This is traditionally already a busy time of the year for the team, and our ability to maintain prompt turnaround periods on building inspection requests has been affected, resulting in delays of possibly up to a week. These delays are also having a knock-on effect on other services such as pool inspections, which are typically booked a month in advance.
Please be patient while we deal with these capacity issues; if you have an inspection booked, please avoid cancelling on the day. Advance notice means we can reorganise and prioritise our workload.

We’re honouring building inspections that are already booked, and doing our best to accommodate everyone where we can, including responding to risk-based inspections as a priority.

Good morning!
Citizens Advice Bureau is organising another Community Seminar for Tuesday 29th November at 1030am in the Rimu Room upstairs in Coastlands - as usual, a talk, Q&A and free morning tea -

This time we have Porirua Kapiti Community Lawyers talking generally about how they help - particularly the disadvantaged - in our community and the range of issues they can help with.

Come along and meet them and ask them questions - there are so many issues nowadays where an understanding of your rights is critical and, sadly, many people still don't know. Things like Consumer Rights, Tenancy, EPAs -

Citizens Advice Bureaux Kapiti and Otaki work closely with our community lawyers and we can also point you in the right direction for help with family matters, neighbour disputes, employment issues, elder care etc.

We are also there for those people who struggle with access to new technology or understanding Government websites, and can help you with access to these, including help with online job applications, so do call us if you need help or someone to talk to 04 298 4944 😊😊😊
