That may mean a long spell of dry weather, so I'd like to share a system for saving young trees and shrubs that I have used with great effect and with a minimal use of water. You get hold of some plastic tubing about 6cms diameter, from plumbing supplies, or second hand from building recyclers. You cut it into about 1 meter lengths and bury one end of each about 15 cms in the soil so it sits upright over part of the root ball. When the dry hits you patrol with your trusty watering can and a kitchen funnel, filling the tubes up to the top. The water goes directly to the roots with no evaporation. Kia kaha. Mike

"I managed to get some birdie time yesterday at Silverstream just in time before the wet weather set in! Spent a bit of time chasing an elusive kōtare but no shots unfortunately! I did get close to a few Goldfinches at one stage which is unusual as they are normally very skittish!
I discovered a shag high up in the trees near a playground too! A shame it was too dark to get a decent capture but I liked the shadow effect! Saw lots of ducks in the stream, I think that there were a couple of Australian Shovellers if I am not mistaken!
The first photos is of tui that I had earlier been stalking around my property. He had plenty to say to me...."
