A WINDY DAY IN PAEKAKARIKI?
MULLED WINE CONCERTS PRESENT BASSOON AND CLARINET STARS
Classical concertgoers are used to seeing the massed ranks of the orchestra. Usually, up amongst the back rows are the woodwind players - flutes, clarinets, oboes and bassoons.

But sometimes, these back-row players are let out to show off what they can do with their beautiful instruments when they are allowed to play solo.

Mulled Wine Concerts will present two rising stars of the wind instrument world in Paekakariki on Sunday 25 July.

Pianist David Barnard (Head of Accompanying at the

New Zealand School of Music) will be joined by clarinettist Ben van Leuven and bassoonist Eli Holmes for a delightful afternoon featuring some of the seldom-heard wind instrument repertoire.

Clarinet and bassoon are joined by the piano in a charming trio by

Russian composer Glinka alongside solo and duet works by Poulenc and Debussy.

Both young players are on the verge of developing international careers but have had to put their travels on hold due to the pandemic.

Van Leuven is Principal Clarinet in the Wellington Youth Orchestra and was Principal Clarinet of the 2020 NZSO National Youth Orchestra.

Holmes won the Grand Prize at the Leitzinger International Bassoon Competition and has achieved a BA degree in Philosophy and Music at Harvard University.

Both were big news at the 2020 Gisborne International Competition and both were awarded places at the 2021 Michael Hill Young Artists Programme in June this year.

They are eagerly awaiting the chance to return overseas to Norway and to the USA to pick up their career development and it is good news for Kapiti concertgoers that they will be able to play their last concert here before this happens.

Poll: If we want to reduce speeding, what do you think actually changes driver behaviour? 🛻🚨🚓

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

In the Post's article on speeding penalties, the question is asked whether speeding fines are truly about road safety, or are they just a way to boost revenue for the Crown?

What do you think? Should speeding motorists receive speeding fines or demerit points?
