Don't leave your pets locked in the car this summer, even if you’re nipping into a shop – a 30°C day turns into 49°C in a car in minutes, even with windows slightly down.

Check the heat of the pavement with your hand before heading out on a walk – if it's hot for you, it will be too hot for little paws.

While we sometimes get calls about dogs trapped in hot cars, only the SPCA New Zealand and police can take action under the Animal Welfare Act. Call either agency first if you see a dog locked in a hot car.

45cm - 50cm knitting needle needed, the thinner the better - but I don't knit though! It's for pulling cables through a narrow aperture.

Happy to collect from anywhere.

If your kids or fur babies love our district's rivers or streams, stay safe this summer by keeping an eye out for toxic algae as the weather gets warmer. It can make people quite sick and can be fatal to dogs, even in tiny amounts.

Toxic algae can form brown or black mats that grow on rocks in the riverbed and wash up and dry on our riverbanks. Dogs love the smell and will eat it if given the chance, so never let them scavenge at the river's edge.
