Heirloom Tomato, Cucumber, Gherkin and Zucchini Plants at Waikanae and Otaki Markets this weekend
It's official! Tomatoes are New Zealand's favourite vegetable according to Yates (even though technically tomatoes are fruit).
We have a wide range of varieties in all sizes and colours (including a so-called blue tomato) originating from all over Europe, North America, Mexico and even Afghanistan. Heirloom tomatoes are those that have been handed down through the generations for their superior performance and, above all, flavour.
This week, in addition to our regular range of Zucchini, we are also introducing 'Tondo Chiaro Di Nizza', an Italian round Zucchini much sought-after in Europe for its flavour and versatility. Not only can 'Tondo' be sliced like a regular Zucchini, it can be cut in half and filled with your favourite savoury stuffing. Ideal as a side dish at a barbecue or even a light main meal.
And, last but not least, we have Gherkins for pickle lovers as well as a selection of Cucumber.

What's your favourite tomato recipe?
Kia ora neighbours. We know your tomato plants are still growing, but we're looking ahead to the harvest already! If you've got a family recipe for tomatoes, we'd love to see it and maybe publish it in our magazine to share with our readers. Send your recipe to mailbox@nzgardener.co.nz, and if we use it in the mag, you will receive a free copy of our February 2025 issue.
