Mary Gow from Mulled Wine Concerts in Paekakariki

CLASSICAL ARTISTS OF THE YEAR
A MULLED WINE CONCERTS PRESENTATION
On Sunday 27 June the beautiful beachfront Memorial Hall in Paekakariki will feature two performers who can truly be described as playing at the highest level of chamber music.

RNZ Concert has recently featured violinist Andrew Beer and pianist Sarah Watkins - Kapiti concertgoers will have the opportunity to hear them live as part of the Mulled Wine Concert series.

Canadian-born Andrew Beer (violin) has been described as a “musical gift” (NY Times) with a “glorious string tone” (Strad magazine). Having performed extensively throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral leader, Andrew has served as Concertmaster of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra since 2014, and has performed as guest Concertmaster with the CBSO (Birmingham), Hallé (Manchester), MSO (Melbourne), ASO (Adelaide), VSO (Vancouver) and NZSO (Wellington). He will be accompanied by pianist Sarah Watkins, herself no stranger to Paekakariki - this will be her fifth appearance!

Sarah’s passion for accompanying and chamber music has led to an impressive career as a performer and recording artist. A graduate of the University of Canterbury (NZ), Sarah went on to earn both MM and DMA degrees from the Juilliard School (NY - USA). She has played as a founding member of the renowned NZTrio for 16 years and now enjoys a wide variety of collaborations with musicians all over New Zealand. She has been an official pianist for the Michael Hill International Violin Competition since its inception in 2001 and the Gisborne International Music Competition since 2008, and regularly appears as a freelance player in the APO.

Together, Andrew and Sarah were awarded the prize for Best Classical Artists at the 2020NZ Music Awards for their album "11 Frames" Their programme in Paekakariki will include Mozart's Sonata in A major and Cesar Franck's Sonata for violin and piano, two giants of the violin and piano repertoire. They will also feature pieces by New Zealander Gillian Whitehead and Florence Price, a wonderful African American composer from the 1920's who is starting to get a lot more airplay.

Kapiti's discerning concert audiences will need no persuading to hear this superb duo in action!

Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.

This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.

Do you think this ban is reasonable?

Poll: Should all neighbours have to contribute to improvements?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

An Auckland court has ruled a woman doesn’t have to contribute towards the cost of fixing a driveway she shares with 10 neighbours.

When thinking about fences, driveways or tree felling, for example, do you think all neighbours should have to pay if the improvements directly benefit them?
