Police said the man went into the ASB Bank at Coastlands mall at about 4:30pm on Friday, threatened staff and presented what appeared to be a firearm.
"No shots were fired and no one was injured during this incident, although staff were understandably shaken," police said in a statement.
The man took off with an undisclosed sum of money, fleeing the scene on foot.
The bank is located on the outer perimeter of the mall, next to a main entrance. Police want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw the man leaving.

This week we've closed our Waikanae Library and Service Centre to enable resources to be diverted to our customer contact centre and primary service desk in Paraparaumu, and Paraparaumu and Ōtaki Libraries.
We acknowledge that any reduction in service is not ideal but this is temporary. We are hopeful that the Waikanae Library and Service Centre will reopen on Monday 1 August, subject to staff availability.
Keep an eye on our website and Council, Kāpiti Coast District Libraries Facebook pages for updates.
