Remember, driving on the beach is restricted to a few areas and for things like launching and retrieving boats. It's not a motorway out there, so please stick to the speed restrictions, and leave the motorbike at home!
It's important we all stick to the rules so everyone stays safe. Council staff have been out and about this summer to chat with beachgoers and, where necessary, issue tickets to drivers parked where they shouldn't be.
There's loads of information about our beaches and how to access them without a car – including the nearly 100 pedestrian access ways along the coast – on our website.

– wait 2–3 days after rain before swimming, and avoid river mouths and stormwater outlets on our beaches
– keep an eye out for toxic algae during summer, dogs are particularly at risk while scavenging at the river’s edge.
And make sure you do summer right by checking if your favourite swimming spots are safe for swimming 👉🏼 www.lawa.org.nz...

If you enjoy birdsong please consider putting out fresh bowls of water everyday in dry weather Somewhere high or open - where they can see the cats coming would be good if possible. And they'd
love your banana ends and kiwifruit skins!

Don't leave your pets locked in the car this summer, even if you’re nipping into a shop – a 30°C day turns into 49°C in a car in minutes, even with windows slightly down.
Check the heat of the pavement with your hand before heading out on a walk – if it's hot for you, it will be too hot for little paws.
While we sometimes get calls about dogs trapped in hot cars, only the SPCA New Zealand and police can take action under the Animal Welfare Act. Call either agency first if you see a dog locked in a hot car.
