As Cyclone Vaianu continues to move south, it is forecast to bring extremely strong winds, heavy rain and large swells to large parts of New Zealand over the weekend.

This storm has the potential to be a significant and damaging event. We know this will be unwelcome news for communities that have recently been affected by severe weather and are still recovering.

More rain falling on ground that’s already saturated, means impacts like fallen trees, landslides, flooding and dangerous river conditions are more likely.

Please stay safe in severe weather. If life, health or property is in danger, call 111 immediately.

During a storm, stay inside. Don't walk around outside. Don't drive unless necessary. Strong winds can fell trees and poles, tear off roofs, and cause branches and debris to fly at high speed.

Put safety first. Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water. Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.

Do not try to walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater.

If you see a landslide, move out of its path and stay away from it. It is important to recognise the warning signs and act quickly.

When it is safe to do so, check on your neighbours and anyone who might need your help.

For advice on how to prepare for dangerous winds and severe weather visit GetReady.govt.nz

For local emergency updates, check your council's and Civil Defence Emergency Management Group’s websites and social media.

A new scam is out there with scammers claiming to be ANZ through WhatsApp, texts, emails, and phone calls. Their goal? To get your personal or banking info — and your money.

ANZ have shared details about how to protect yourself, and these apply to any message from your bank.

Think twice before acting and...
✅Double-check who’s contacting you. If something feels off, don’t reply.
✅Contact the bank directly using official details (their website or app) - not the message you received.
✅Don’t click links in unexpected or suspicious messages.
✅Never share sensitive info like codes, passwords, or banking logins - they will never ask for these.
✅Don’t allow remote access or screen sharing on your device, even if they claim to be from a trusted organisation.

ANZ shared that they may contact you to check a transaction but they will never ask for access to your device, security codes, or to move your money.

Have you seen or received something like this recently?

The theft happened on Tuesday, between 4.20am and 4.50am and was reported at 8am.

Sergeant Wayne Sandbrook says two men arrived in a light truck and were seen filling a fuel trailer, a fuel pod and drums with diesel from an on-site tank.

“The offenders have made off with a large amount of diesel, which is a major hit for a local business and its hard-working staff.

“Both people involved have attempted to hide their identity, but we’re continuing to make enquiries to hold these offenders to account.

We will not accept this offending in our community.

“A Scene of Crime Officer has processed the scene, but we would like to hear from anyone who saw a white-coloured light truck towing a small fuel trailer in the Marton area around the time of the offending, or any other suspicious activity.”

Anyone with information is asked to make a report online at 105.police.govt.nz, clicking “Update Report”, or by calling 105.

Please use the reference number 260407/4600.

Alternatively, information can be reported anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

“Offending like this hurts hard-working people in our community, and our message to people is if you see anything suspicious, please report it to us immediately.”
