Things to Consider When Exploring Blind & Curtain Ideas

Hoping to buy blinds or curtains but feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the choices? You might walk into a store with great curtain ideas but it’s easy to lose focus when you see all the options on the shelves.
Did you know that blinds and curtains can be energy efficient? Did you know there are more types of blinds that the typical shutters? There’s so much to consider!

To help you narrow down your options, here are some tips to pick the right blinds and curtains that work best for you:

1. Colour
Your choice of colour will be among the main priorities when choosing the ideal blinds or window curtains. Getting the wrong colour can ruin the aesthetic value of the whole room.
The wrong colours on the wrong windows can also lead to quick degradation. If you use strong colours like blood red on windows where the sun shines often, the colours could fade quickly. Go around this by choosing blinds or curtains with nude or neutral light colours, ensuring they’ll still look good even after fading a bit.

2. Measurements
Your second step is to make sure you get the right measurements. The general rule of thumb is that your blinds or curtain panels should be longer and wider than your windows. Drapes should go down to the floor.

If you want to make your windows and walls look bigger than they are, include a few inches above the window. Hanging your curtains 4-5 inches above the window frame creates an illusion of length.

3. Material
Blinds come in all shapes and sizes. Generic blinds like shutters or slats use aluminium or wood. Sheers use glass and these are great if you want to filter out light and striking glares in the room.

Curtains, on the other hand, come in too many options. Most use cotton, wool, silk, and linen. Thicker curtain fabric is great if you want to control temperature and prevent bright light from seeping into the room. Lighter fabric is better when you want to keep the airflow circulating.

Material choice will also affect your budget. It goes without saying that the stronger and more functional materials will cost more.

4. Style
Getting the right fabric, right measurements, and the right colour won’t do you much good if the style of the blinds or curtains doesn’t click with your personal preferences.

There are a lot of stylistic blinds and curtain ideas to choose from. Do you want to stick with plain colours and a sleek design for a modern look? Will you go for deep colours, embroidery, and frills for a Victorian or Edwardian aesthetic?

Blinds can be boring, white with no style at all, or as unique as vertical sheers using rotating glass materials.

5. Ease of Use
Generic blinds are easy to use; you have one line to pull to open or shut the blinds and another line to rotate the individual panels. Cheap curtains require you to pull them open by hand and then tie them manually but you may find a few affordable choices with their own rope.

In short, make sure you check if the curtains and blinds are easy to use. You don’t want to spend more time than you have to only to open your window and look outside.

Stormy came to us after her owner died. The family was unaware he had a cat, so she spent 3 weeks on her own before we were called out to trap her. She is approximately 10- 11yrs old and had been with her human dad since she was a kitten.

She is very timid at first and will need a quiet, pet-free home.
Such a lovely, sweet-natured cat once she gets to know you. Loves sitting on your chest and being very close to you.

She would suit an older person or couple who is home most of the time very well.

She is also eligible for our foster to adopt program. Foster to adopt homes can be in Wellington, Hutt, Kapiti, or Levin.

What is Foster-to-Adopt you might ask?
This is where you take home a cat that might be a bit shyer at first, and give them time to warm up to you and your family. The period for FTA is around 4-6 weeks, depending on the cat. This ensures we have matched the right cat for your family, before finalising the adoption. Cats will remain owned by F3 during the foster period and the same terms apply to all our foster cats.

Please visit our info page under the adoption tab to learn about adopting from us.

www.forgottenfelines.org.nz...

Before setting up a meet and greet, We ask for any potential adopters to fill out our questionnaire below

www.forgottenfelines.org.nz...

As with all of our adoptable cats, he is looking for a home that can commit to keeping him inside at night. Any young kittens need to remain indoor-only until at least 6 months of age and cats over 6 months old for at least 4 weeks before going outside.

It's a bit long.... Sorry 'bout that.
FYI.... I am not selling anything and am not associated with anyone selling anything.

This is for safety information only and it is up to you what you do with it.

Something that we rarely give any thought to are Tire on our vehicles.Sure the tread depth gets measured at WoF time and if it's above the legal limit they get forgotten about 'till next WoF.
But the checking really needs to go deeper than that.

What most people never think about is that with a car you only have 4 small areas, each not much bigger than the palm of your hand, that are in contact with the road that have to do all the work of accelerating, braking, steering, cornering etc in the dry and in the wet.

Check them out and see if there is a series of tiny cracks in the side wall (see photo).
If there are then it's more than time to think about replacing it.
Even a tire that has never been run can reach this state as rubber drying out is a time dependent thing as well as a usage thing.

All tires have a manufacture Date Code on them and although there is no law against running older tires as long as the tread is legal it is generally reckoned that at around 5-6 years they should be replaced. If the date code (see photo) is 0116 or older (week 1 of 2016) you should seriously think of replacing them.
Sometimes the date code is on one side only so if you can't see it ask at your next WoF if they can tell you how old it is.

Several things occur as a tire gets older which cause the tire to become less useful as it ages. Firstly, the process of vulcanization which gives the tire it's elastic properties and strength continues as the tire is exposed to movement, light and heat. The consequence of this is that the tire becomes increasingly hard and stiff as it ages.

Regardless of tire age, you should not use tires if they are showing signs of bulging or cracking in either the sidewall or tread.

Before you buy a new tire check (or ask) the date code. There is little point paying premium price for a 2 year old 'New' tire, you need a tire manufactured within the last 6 months (9 months at the outside).

Since 2000 the date code has been 4 digits, the first 2 are the Week Number and the last two are the year Code... i.e. 3819 is week 38 of 2019.
The old numbers were 3 digits like 418 which was week 41 of either 1978, 1988, 1998 no way to actually tell the exact year.

It is entirely up to you what you do with this information I am just pointing it out to you in case you were not aware of it.

The last photo is the state of a tire on a car that the Derbyshire police stopped in the UK with a mother driving her children around on it....

I got quite passionate about educating myself on tires after having a rear near side tire blow out while going round a roundabout in a rag-top MGB when I was 20 and living in the UK. I am lucky to be alive as if it had have skidded and hit the curb and flipped over I would have been crushed, and it was very hard to control and bring to a stop in a safe place, probably lucky it was past midnight and very few cars on the road.

As I said, it is up to you what you do with this information and I am selling nothing and am not associated with anyone selling anything.

I hope someone finds this useful.
