From 11am NZST on Thursday 30 April until Sunday 17 May, Artfair.co.nz will be hosting a Virtual Art Fair where you will discover more than 30 galleries from New Zealand and Australia displaying works that would have otherwise been seen at the 2020 Auckland Art Fair.
The Virtual Art Fair is in recognition of the artists who have already made special works for the Auckland Art Fair that couldn’t happen, and the galleries who have supported them in doing so.
“It comes at a time of global uncertainty, when the importance of art, community and culture are especially apparent,” their team said in a recent statement.
The Auckland Art Fair is designed to be “a celebration – as best we can – of the talent and diversity of art making by artists from our region; not only across New Zealand and Australia, but also around the wider Pacific-rim. We hope that, wherever possible, some of these artists and galleries will be supported by someone buying a work of art.”
Browse, look, enquire and consider as you get to know new galleries and artists in support of contemporary culture at a time when the artists and galleries really need it.

You could use a chair like this in a home office, as a plant stand, or as a bedside table for your books and lamp. Painting one chair is an easy way to inject a bit of colour into a room too.
Make the most of this weekend with this easy step by step project idea from Resene.

While we went back to work today, we know many of you are still confined to your bubbles, so our crew were keen to do something fun for those in their own neighbourhoods.
We've planted ICON logos near our homes for you to hunt out on your daily walks (see example below). If you find one, take a photo of yourself with it for proof and DM it to us (via facebook - Icon Construction + Renovation). If you're first, you'll win a $25 voucher for SOS Cafe to support a local establishment of your choice.
We've hidden them (sort of) near parks, beaches, places of activity or carparks, mainly, in the following suburbs;
▪️East End
▪️Vogeltown
▪️Frankleigh Park
▪️Westown
▪️Ngamotu
▪️Highlands Park and
▪️Inglewood (High School end)
We'll release a clue a day for each different spot - unless someone finds it first, of course. If you know someone in one of the neighbourhoods above, let them know! Happy hunting. 👀✌️

And believe me the May issue is packed with the good stuff, with ideas of what you can sow, plant, pick and preserve to make the most of your garden right now, plus Lynda Hallinan reflects on 60 lessons for gardeners from the lockdown, a bumper gardening quiz, and you can visit a spectacular Taupō garden alive with birds, a whimsical wonderland in Glenorchy in full bloom and meet the clever and resourceful gardeners of the Chatham Islands... all without leaving your bubble. And thanks so much to everyone who has been in touch to offer their support to the NZ Gardener team, especially those who have subscribed or renewed or purchased a subscription as a gift (an NZ Gardener subscription is a great Mother's Day idea, just sayin'!) We are so grateful to you all, and it's your support that allows us to keep inspiring and informing gardeners from all around New Zealand as we have been doing now for more than 75 years. Please share this message with your gardening groups on social too. We’re looking forward to the many more years of celebrating the amazing gardens and gardeners of New Zealand that lie ahead.

We could easily lose what we have gained. Our success, or failure, depends on the decisions that we’ll each make alone – but which in turn – will affect all of us.
Two weeks then a review
• On 11 May, we will review our progress and decide if we can safely continue to step down restrictions, or if more measures are required to protect us all.
• So the decisions we each make now, matter. Because every interaction we have is an opportunity for the virus to spread.
Keeping safe at Alert Level 3
• At Alert Level 3, the best way to keep those around you safe, is by keeping your bubble small. Interact with as few people as possible. Less people equals less risk. And continue to stay at home whenever you can.
• We should each be making the minimal number of trips. Be sure to stay local, and only make necessary trips.
• And importantly, work and learn from home if you can.
Let’s do this
We’re a team of 5 million. Formidable. And we can do this.
So thank you New Zealand for making the right decisions, when it really counts.

With the country on the verge of getting going again (hopefully once we get to Level 2 in 3 weeks time) I thought it appropriate to post my report. This is the 7th time I have visited LLC/GBAG since LLC opened. I was also keen to see the latest much heralded display. Presented my Pukeariki Library card for free entry. There were a couple of wooden pieces of furniture in main hall and two small Len Lye sculptures. One was being demonstrated at time with a staff member and one member of public present. Very noisy but no ear muffs on offer so I quickly passed. Around first corner there was a substantial LL sculpture but it was under repair. Around the next corner were some more furniture and other interesting sculptures and a few art pieces. Once I got to GBAG there were many fine works to view but not a single description or caption. A missed opportunity I thought as I could have spent several hours and probably several visits to fully appreciate. I understandably took less than an hour. On the way out I spoke to the chap on the front desk and asked about the lack of captions/descriptions. He stated idea was to encourage people to think more about works. Sorry but that did not work for me. It was still worth the visit but captions/descriptions please.
