Royal Cam star Tiaki leaves the nest as bumper albatross breeding season wraps up
Otago Peninsula’s famous albatross chick has taken to the skies, but a satellite tracker will allow fans of her livestream to keep following her journey.
Tiaki was born at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head on January 24 and is among up to 30 new chicks ready to leave their nests.
The chicks have grown steadily since hatching in January and February and the first to fledge took flight on September 6. Tiaki fledged on Saturday morning, and the Department of Conservation (DOC) expects all the chicks will have fledged by early next month.
Tiaki was this season’s Royal Cam star, with more than 2.3 million people tuning in for about 400,000 hours since December 1.
Those who watched Tiaki grow on the livestream can continue to follow her journey using a satellite tracker that will show where the albatrosses go in their early years. Continue reading here.
Poll: Should we ditch daylight saving? 🕰️
First introduced in New Zealand in 1927 with the passing of the Summer Time Act, it's what we know as 'Daylight Saving' and this year it ends on the first Sunday in April.
While we do get to sleep in this time around, some people would like to scrap the clock tinkering for good.
And why? Some evidence suggests the time changes are bad for our health as they mess with sleep patterns leading to short-term fatigue and affecting mood. Meanwhile the hour change is frustrating for farmers and a nightmare for getting the littlies to sleep. But what's your take?
-
36.1% Yes - get rid of the clock changes
-
63.2% No, I enjoy it
-
0.6% Other - I'll share below
Don't overthink this riddle...
I have a silver sole
but no feet,
I make my living by bringing the heat.
What am I?
