After their successful exhibition together last year, Petones' seaside gallery is excited to welcome back Rachel Walker & Rika Nagahata for another exciting, collaborative exhibition inspired by New Zealand birds and nature.

Rachel 'Walker has had two previous sell out exhibitions at Artsapce Gallery and as well as presenting new, original paintings for this exhibition, Rachel will also exhibit a new series of limited edition prints. Rachel's pen and ink artworks draw on her awe and love of New Zealand nature, her drippy, energetic style is both loose in form and precisely detailed, capturing the attitude and beauty of our birds, sea creatures, reptiles and wild animals. Rachel graduated at Massey University in Wellington and her career to date has included a number of successful solo gallery exhibitions, creating cover art for magazines, school journals, album covers and wine labels.

Rika was born in Japan and studied at the Osaka Art University where she majored and graduated in printmaking. She moved to New Zealand in 2008 and now mainly uses ink and watercolours to create originals. Many of her exquisitely beautiful artworks feature New Zealand birds with a special connection to her homeland, she has dressed them in kimono's, so beautifully painted that you can almost feel the silk with your eyes. Her patterns and fine lines reflect the intricate process of etching and this unique connection gives her works a special feel and presence that enables the viewer to be entranced and get lost in each of her artworks.

One of New Zealand's greatest ever players is returning to the softball diamond at 55.
Rhonda Hira will lace up her cleats and play in this weekend's Fastball 45 tournament in Christchurch, as a pick-up player for the Kaiapoi Queens.
Hira, who is studying to become a personal trainer, said she was "actually quite motivated'' to help the younger Kaiapoi players and, after training with her teammates, is confident she won't let them, or herself, down.
Hira played for Hutt Valley and at five world championships. She is not the only veteran on a softball roster.
Current White Sox assistant-coach Melisa Tupuivao (nee Upu), another Sydney Olympian, will mark her 46th birthday as player-coach of the Hutt Valley Kotuku Raiders at the central qualifying tournament on December 4-6.

Every year at about this time, Claire Turner and Gabrielle Ralph start preparing to fill hundreds of families’ cupboards at a time when they need it most.
Working with local primary schools, the pair put together hundreds of $150 food hampers for families across Hutt Valley, Porirua and Tawa in the lead-up to Christmas.
But this year, their efforts – through their charity, Nourish – are needed more than ever.
This year the charity has demand for 1000 hampers, at a cost of $135,000. It is double last year’s output, a reflection of the increased pressure families are under as a result of Covid-19, the pair explain.

Anson House, built in 1899, is listed in the Hutt City Council's district plan as a building of regional significance, being one of the last original bay villas left in the city.
The 400 square metre home was built for W.G. Foster, the second mayor of Lower Hutt, but is named after Dr George Edward Anson, chief New Zealand physician of the Australian Mutual Provident Society (now AMP) and later a chairman of directors for The Dominion newspaper.
He took ownership of the home in 1906.
