The 70-year-old – voted Wellington’s Player of the Century – earned 26 Kiwis caps between 1970 and 1982, and played in four World Cup tournaments. He played a total of 69 games for the Kiwis, including non-internationals, and scored 18 tries.
Whittaker was inducted as a Legend of League in 2012.

In the lead up to the 2020 election, Stuff is keeping voters up to date with what’s happening in their electorate, through Neighbourly. Here’s what you need to know about the candidates in the running to be Hutt South' MP.
At the October 17 election, New Zealanders will have the opportunity to choose their regional spokesperson.
Through the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting system, those enrolled can vote for the party they want as well as a local representative.
Why does my MP matter?
The person elected will be the voice for your region in Parliament. If you’re having trouble getting entitlements or dealing with Government departments, they can help. If your community needs funding for certain projects or activities, or there isn’t enough healthcare in the area, the elected MP can step in and help.

I have 2 favourites, Stanley … View moreI used to think walking/hiking along the ridge lines were for the more adventurous people, this was far from the truth. This winter I journeyed out from various trail heads located around Wainuiomata, it was a pleasant surprise to find quite a few public access points. I have 2 favourites, Stanley Street and Arakura School. There are many destinations you can plan for a day hike. Going south Days bay, Butterfly Creek. Going North Mt Towai Lookout, Te Whiti Riser, Naenae, and further North. Heading East (from Sunny Grove) Orongorongo River, Remutaka Forest Park, etc. Heading North is what I do most weekends, and depending on how I feel determines how far I go, typically to the mobile tower? north of Wainuiomata.
An example of my Saturday Hike. I have never done the 'Official' Te Whiti Riser Trail, I would normally descend the steep fire-break to Te Whiti Park and return the same way so this is what I did. This trail is family friendly, the gradient is easy going and is extremely popular. On this day there was many people of all ages, walking, trail running, mountain biking and just having a good time. Honestly not for me :-)
If anyone is curious about walking on the ridge, happy to go out on a weekend walk/hike, any level.

A proud member of the Petone Rugby Club, he was a friend and colleague of the legendary fullback Bob Scott. Here a few facts that you might not know about Leslie.
- His father, Andy, was a professional footballer in Scotland and later became a life member of the Petone Football Club.
- As well as rugby, he represented New Zealand at softball and was also a good basketballer and excelled at waterpolo.
- He lived for sport at school and liked to joke about his success at School Certificate. "I went to school to eat my lunch and play sport. I got 55 in School Cert, 11 for each subject."
- In 2017, he was inducted into the Hutt Valley Sports Awards Hall of Fame by All Black coach Steve Hansen.
- Leslie played 144 games for Wellington, captaining them to a win in the Ranfurly Shield in 1974.
- His wife is Lesley Leslie. Their children, John and Marty, were both talented rugby players.
- In 2007, he was elected President of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union.
- He has had a long association with the New Zealand Rugby Foundation, which helps players who have suffered a spinal injury.

The Petone Historical Society has noted that shed has not returned. It has been told by the council that it is being held in storage by HCC for eventual refurbishment, but that costs are high so it is not expected that it will not be returned until strengthening work is undertaken on the wharf.
The Society is keen to see it refurbished and returned as quickly as possible.

The Imperial Tobacco manufacturing site is to become an industrial park.
Wellington business man Richard Burrell has purchased the site, which is five minutes from the centre of Petone. Imperial Tobacco is decommissioning the site, which will be demolished to make way for a business park.

Normally they are hopping around on the ground, which I don't think makes for as nice a shot as a perching bird. It's amazing how fussy I've become considering I didn't even know they existed two years ago - everything small and brown was a house sparrow. Now I've got my eye in I can see they are quite different.
The bellbirds, aka korimako, have been into the tree fuchsias. I saw two today with their faces covered in purple snort. It is lovely having lots of bellbirds in the Hutt. I put out a bowl of sugar water and they like to stop by for a sip (as do the little wax-eyes, aka tauhou).
