Hutt City Council are proud to present Puanga ki Matariki 2022, a programme of FREE activities and events that allows our community to join in celebrations throughout June.

The first holiday to celebrate Matariki in Aotearoa – also the first public holiday to recognise Te Ao Māori – will be on Friday 24th June 2022.

Each iwi celebrates this time of year differently; some of our Mana Whenua partners celebrate Puanga (also known as Rigel), as the Matariki cluster is hard to see from some parts of our city.

"This is my 25year old Chinchilla called Chilli. She is a Standard grey colour, and she is the sweetest wee girl, who loves her cuddles and snuggles with Mum, and loves pats and tickles from all of our family. Its very very rare to have a Chinchilla who loves to be touched as much as she does. She is a rescue who came from people who didn't know how to properly care for her. Her favorite treats are dried Red rose petals, dried rose buds and most of all, her Apple sticks. I love her so much."

The compare's attire was impressive , as were the orchestra and the guest artists The mayor of Hutt City Council introduced the concert, but who would've known who he was. He was wearing a casual suit and no tie, really. One would've expected to recognise Him by way of his appearance. At the very least he should have worn a tie. Really MR MAYOR if you were at the Wellington town hall you probably would have been wearing a dress suit and your Mayoral chain of office . We might be from the “ burbs” but , Hey, we know our etiquette

"I was going to leave the tūī for my checklist until the kowhai or flax were flowering later in the year - you know, for the poses, but this guy just about landed on my lap in the Herb Garden at the Wellington Bot Gardens - he's on a stake by the curry plant, which funnily enough, really smells like curry. He was singing up a storm in the pine trees before swooping down for a quick sniff. Bird #83 in 2022."
