Ok Wellington are the NPC champs from 2022 and are the proud holders of the new-look Ranfurly Shield from outstanding performances in 2022, but the team that took the field against Canterbury was not anywhere near the team that had triumphed in 2022 or even a few days earlier in 2023.
Everyone knows Canterbury and the Crusaders and everyone knows how utterly hard either team is to beat on their own home turf.
But a Wellington squad that had defended the Shield twice in four days (including against the strong Tasman side) and now had to play a champion Crusaders-filled Canterbury only four days later were up against it. So much so that in recognition that defeat was almost certain with the Shield not at stake, the team selected were almost all from outside the top 15 starters and many from the fringes of the large playing squad. And it had an untested new captain.
So the young Lions side thoroughly deserved their win even if it took a brilliant try in the last couple of minutes to separate the teams. For instance, the co-commentator said as the teams lined up for the start, that the Canterbury pack was going to rein mayhem upon the Wellington pack presenting them with unrelenting problems at scrum and lineout times. It just didn't happen.
So after its flurry of 3 championship games in 8 days, Wellington Lions are the only unbeaten side in the 14-team comp with 5 from 5. And the coaches are left with the task of just who to select for the next game with at least 30 players putting up their hands.

But NZ's 20 athletes failed to win a medal of any description during the nine-day event which was probably the most outstanding world or Olympics athletics ever staged.
The venue itself and the connecting facilities were outstanding and every day the 35,000 spectator stadium was either filled or near-filled.
A new Ussain Bolt emerged in the form of an American sprinter named Noah Lyles and he provided the spark that an event of this type needs as its brightest ultimate star.
NZ athletes were very largely disappointing. We had performer after performer failing to provide a personal best effort or even a matching personal best performance in order to secure a better placing and in several cases, gaining at least a silver or bronze medal.
These can be reeled off but include shot putter Walsh, high jumper Kerr, Javelin thrower Peeters and sprinter Hobbs.
Only women shot putter Wesche and steeplechaser Beamish produced PBs.
So let's hope for better things in less than 12 months time when the Olympic Games are held in Paris. Track & field is the supreme event of the Olympics.

The sun is out, the grass is dry and you've fired up the mower. Your neighbour's half is looking a little overgrown, do you do theirs too?

All this means is that TransDec will increase the train services in the region to almost certainly include 10 minute-only gaps in its weekday scheduling and a more frequency at other times; a promised increase in public buses on the roads throughout the region.
These measures are taking into account the increased usage of public transport and the demand that will generate from new housing (such as town housing) and apartment blocks where vehicle ownership is or will be limited or non existent.
New housing areas are deliberately planned to take into account the lower expectation of vehicle-ownership and number of vehicles per household in the future.
As well, looking into the future a little bit further, there is the advance of the driverless vehicle which will allow people to hire vehicles on a trip by trip basis and not need to desire a privately owned vehicle parked or garaged. This will suit up with the advance of apartments which usually have restricted or no parking facilities and that of town houses with limited or no parking.
Capping this is the completion of cycle lanes to allow people to safely ride on the sides of roads and cater for the increased usage of cycling as a means of transportation and recreation.
Less need for vehicle ownership is the increasing permanency of people working from home instead of travelling to a work station and in the use of the internet for the ordering of and the delivering of supermarket products and all other items.

850 above average apartments within multistoried blocks, a hotel, a retail village including bars and cafe/restaurants, other entertainment and features as well as facilities compatible with racing are replacing the two old grandstands and the land inbetween and on the outers.
As a local I hope that the Kiwi Rail-promised walkway from the Wallaceville Estate to the Trentham Railway Station and thus also the new racecourse complex, will finally be constructed. A walk to all of this on a good day would be right up my alley.

Kaka are so intelligent, and much more gentle than their South Island cousins, the Kea. It's always more investigation than sheer vandalism and mischief! It's such a joy and privilege to have them around."
