A total of 22 stations like this will be located throughout Wellington, Porirua and the Hutt Valley, providing 20 litres of water per person per day, from 'Day ' should a large earthquake cause damage to the region's water reticulation system.
There will be four stations in Lower Hutt (Korokoro, Lowry Bay, Days Bay and Wainuiomata) which will supply water to multiple distribution points throughout the city. You can read more about the stations here: wellingtonwater.co.nz...
The network is the result of a partnership between Wellington, Porirua and Hutt Valley councils and central government, with $6 million contributed by the councils and $6 million from the government.
Mr Bassett is chairman of the Wellington Water Committee and Mr Wallace is chairman of the Wellington Regional Emergency Management joint committee.
We will keep you posted when the first of Lower Hutt's four stations is opened and you will be able to check it out for yourself.

The Minister of Civil Defence, Hon Kris Faafoi, mayors and representatives from the four councils, (Wellington City Council, Hutt City Council, Upper Hutt City Council, Porirua City Council) were in attendance to help open the first of the community water stations, and learn more about how they'll operate.
Wellington's drinking water supply network is vulnerable. Underground pipes and reservoirs could be badly damaged in a significant earthquake and as a result some suburbs could be without drinking water for more than 100 days.
Over the past 12 months we have been working with central and local government to develop an above ground emergency water network that will supply the more than 400,000 people across Wellington from day eight following a disaster.
It’s important to remember that following a major earthquake, the first thing people rely on is themselves and their families, so storing water is a must for every household.
You should have 20 litres of stored water for every person, every day, for at least seven days. That’s 560 litres for a four-person household. You may need to store more if you have unwell people, or small children in your home.
200 litre tanks (which are easy to install) can be purchased from your local council for $105.

The Electricity (Hazards from Tree) Regulations 2003 were introduced by Government to help us achieve this. These regulations state that there are responsibilities that you are required to undertake with the trees on your property. Trees need to be kept a minimum distance from power lines and Wellington Electricity will work with you to ensure this requirement is achieved.
Treescape will advise through “Cut and Trim” notices your requirements to maintain trees clear of power lines. On receipt of this advice, you will need to complete this work if safe to do so or engage a suitably qualified and competent tree trimming contractor.
For further information please contact Wellington Electricity on 0800 248 148 or Treescape on 0800 873 396 (0800–TREEWORK), or visit our website, www.welectricity.co.nz

Are any locals frustrated by the lack of safe, usable pedestrian access ways between Percy Cameron and the Taita end Harcourt Werry to the River Trail? I'm sure I'm not the only one! It's especially worse being winter and the uneven grassy terrain is boggy, muddy and a real inconvenience for mums with prams, the wheelchair bound or even other users otherwise at a disadvantage from the lack of suitable pathways. I'm particularly concerned by the development of the sports hub, while it'll be a big drawcard, it could also mean less space due to car parking on these grassed areas, for pedestrians to wade through. It is extremely hazardous at present with weekend sports with cars parked at either side of Percy Cameron on the non existant path from the stopbank to Harcourt Werry.
Anyways I've sent an email to the council (the second in two years) again highlighting the problem and requesting a more proactive response than the usual " it's too expensive" It signals a lazy approach with a lack of proper investigation into more economical options, with a lack of consideration for those such as the elderly, disabled and pram pushers who would love to utilize this wonderful and free scenic opportunity of fresh air without the hassle of hosing down pram wheels, getting stuck in the mud, twisting an ankle or getting clipped by a car!
