Raining on Whitianga’s Upgrade Parade
Celebrations at the weekend marked the completion of the Whitianga Town Centre upgrade project with much backslapping and praise for a job "well done". Sorry to be a grinch just before Christmas – but it will be some time before we really know whether this is a worthy well-planned project, or instead an avoidable waste of $6.5 million of ratepayer funds because the area has been flooded from the sea. As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙
One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.
