TCDC have produced a Coastal Management Strategy engagement document. This sets out a range of coastal issues including coastal hazards for discussion. A series of public meetings will be held around the Peninsula in October.

This is all highly commendable but there is no cause for further delay in mapping coastal flooding hazard areas. The Govt required this work be done in 2010. Identify the hazards– then talk to the public. This is what most other coastal Councils are doing.

Government's Sea Level Rise Guidelines Disregarded

Whitianga Project Could be Submerged

The Thames-Coromandel District Council has ignored Government sea level rise guidance and Regional Council sea flooding maps when considering the proposal for a $6.5 million upgrade of the Whitianga Town Centre. According to that advice and mapping the whole project area could potentially be flooded from the sea in coming decades. No expert assessment of the risk of sea flooding to the area has been carried out, and the Council has declined to get this assessment done before funds are committed. This may lead to the whole beautification project becoming a submerged “blue” elephant and $6.5m of ratepayer funds being wasted.
Are you OK with that as a ratepayer/resident?
