West Coast council defends its flood plan after critics say it doesn't go far enough

The West Coast Regional Council has defended its plans for flood protection in Westport, with its chairman saying it's time for action โ€œnot hand-wringingโ€.

It has presented two options for the town, which was inundated with floods on July 17 and 18 that forced more than 2000 of its 4500-odd residents to evacuate and left more than 460 homes damaged.

The Buller District Council criticised the two options for floodwalls and stopbanks along the Buller and Orowaiti rivers, saying the regional council did not take climate change or liquefaction into account and one of the options was no better than doing nothing.

Regional council chairman Allan Birchfield and acting chief executive Heather Mabin said the working group made the deliberate decision to design the floodwalls and stopbanks to the current climate scenario rather than a future scenario because affordability for ratepayers was key.

โ€œThis is time for action, not hand-wringing and engaging more and more experts," Birchfield said.

Did you know 1 in 4 New Zealand adults will suffer from a mental disorder or distress at some point in their lives? When they do, letโ€™s make sure they donโ€™t have to go it alone. To create safer, more caring communities we need to not only look after ourselves but those around us as well.

For the month of September, we want to come together to share ways to boost mental health and well-being. For example, you could host an online catch up or quiz, call a neighbour who lives alone, challenge your family and friends to try a new hobby or move your body more to improve your own well-being. If you or someone you know is going through a rough patch, donโ€™t forget you can call or text 1737 anytime for free support from a trained counsellor.

Want to share your thoughts? Let us know how youโ€™re looking out for your well-being and helping others with theirs this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to: info@neighbourhoodsupport.co.nz

An expert report has criticised a multimillion-dollar West Coast Regional Council plan for Westport flood protection as being no better than doing nothing.

The regional councilโ€™s proposals, which are out for public consultation as part of its long-term plan, include a $3.4 million option that would include the building of a flood wall along the Buller River at Westport and partial stop banks around the town.

The options were in the planning stages when the town was inundated with floods on July 17 and 18 that forced more than 2000 of its 4500-odd residents to evacuate and left more than 460 homes damaged.

In its submission the Buller District Council says it has โ€œmajor concernsโ€ about the proposal because it does not take into climate change into account or the river flows in a one-in-100 year event. Read more here.

Dear neighbours,

We're looking for lockdown gardening ideas! With New Zealanders stuck at home everyone is keen to get into their gardens, but they can't get to the shops to buy plants and seeds. So we want to hear from you some suggestions for crops you can start or sow from what you have on hand or useful gardening hacks using just what you have at home already without going to the shops.

It doesn't have to be a big idea - just something like growing spring onions from the base or sprouting avocado seeds to make a houseplant. Send your tips and ideas to mailbox@nzgardener.co.nz and we'll publish the best ideas in NZ Gardener.

Make sure you include your full name and address - only your name and the region you live in will be published but if we use your tip we will send you a free copy of the magazine.
