An evening of singer/songwriters delivering their stories in song for you at the Old Lodge Theatre on Saturday 23rd September.

Al Hunter one of our local singer/ songwriters who is currently working on his 4th album. Rated as one of the best singer /songwriters in the country he has a library of dozens of unrecorded songs. His songs come from the heart and he will take you on a journey.

Phil and Lana Doublet, both singer/ songwriters, Phil’s 2nd album Endless Highway being in the finals for country album of the year this year. Lana has had considerable success in various country music singing competitions and is a very accomplished lyricist. Phil also teaches guitar and his ability will tell you why.

Lanae & Bruce Hill from Ashburton have several Gold Guitar Awards in different categories between them. Lanae’s debut album contains all originals apart from one track and she also has connections with Hokitika and the West Coast. Bruce is also an accomplished guitarist and compliments them as a duo.
Des Hetherington needs no introduction to locals. An original ‘Coalranger’ Des has played with many well known artists and had a hand in writing many of the ‘Coalrangers’ most loved songs. Maybe he will do a few on the night.

Cameron Walsh an up and coming 18 year old from Woodend is putting the ‘cool’ back in to country. His recently released album ‘Black Gold’is well worth purchasing with some great covers along with excellent originals. Cam has just recently done a successful ‘Outback’ tour in Australia with several other young kiwi country artists.

An informal evening of personalised stories presented and performed by a cross section of talented people who love to entertain.

This production is the result of almost 6 months work, and as a Westland High School Community Production, it brings together cast members from Greymouth, Hokitika and Kaniere Primary Schools, and our own Hokitika Community.

Fiddler on the Roof is set in Anatevka in 1905 and is based on a collection of short stories entitled "Tevye and his Daughters" (or "Tevye the Dairyman") and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. The story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love – each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

This is the last musical that Nick Meissel and Tim Shawcross will be doing together, and both Nick and Tim are taking to the stage in this production, with Nick playing Tevye - The Dairyman and Tim playing Lazar Wolf – The Butcher. Nick will soon be leaving Westland High School to take up a drama teacher role at Dunstan High in Alexandra.
This is a beautiful show, it will make you laugh, smile, and even shed the odd tear

The show starts this Wednesday 20th September at 7.00pm, and will run through to Saturday 23rd with a special matinee performance at 1.00pm as well as the evening performance at 7.00pm.

Cast members include:

Tevye -The Dairyman played by Nick Meissel
Golde - his wife played by Ellie Sutton
Tzeitel - his daughter played by Kieryn Minehan
Hode l- his daughter played by Caitlyn Esson
Chava - his daughter played by Kristyn Lang
Sphrintze - his daughter played by Demi Pearson
Bielke - his daughter (played by Nick's daughter Maddison Meissel)
Lazar Wolf - The butcher played by Tim Shawcross

NZ Mountain Film Festival

Friday 15th September,

Doors open 6.30pm, movies start 7.00pm

The 2017 Hokitika screening of the always popular New Zealand Mountain Film Festival is happening this Friday night at the Hokitika Regent.

Don't miss the West Coast outdoor community social event of the year. Come and watch some epic films and get inspired.
The movie line-up includes;

• Give Me Five - 11 mins, Director: Arnaud Longobardi, France, subtitles.
The film is the story behind an attempt at formation flight between a speed-wing and two wingsuits pilots.

• Waiau-toa Odyssey - 13 mins, Director: Simon Waterhouse, NZ.
Five adventurers set off on a six-day, 300km unsupported journey. By combining new bike-packing and pack-rafting technology, they link together whitewater rivers and backcountry tracks through some of NZ’s under-appreciated wilderness areas.

• Into Twin Galaxies - A Greenland Epic - 52 mins, Director: Jochen Schmoll, Germany. Three adventurers embark on an insane kayaking mission in Greenland. With kite skis, they tow their whitewater kayaks over 1000 kilometres of the Greenland Ice Cap to reach the most northern river ever paddled.

• North of Known - 52 mins, Director: Bryan Smith, Canada.
An attempted traverse by paraglider of the entire 700-kilometre length of the Alaska Range. A rugged, convoluted, and downright burly adventure in terrain where bears outnumber people, roads are non-existent, and flying conditions are completely unpredictable.

• Link Sar West - 31 mins, Director: Jon Griffith, UK.
Link Sar in Pakistan was an obsession for UK alpinist and photographer Jonathan Griffith. He made three attempts on the peak before reaching the west summit on his forth try. Near disastrous circumstances, with riveting video and breathtaking cinematography.

We are especially lucky to have Waiau-Toa Director Simon Waterhouse joining us to introduce his film. There will also be a display of some of the kit the crew used on their epic adventure.

Doors open at 6:30pm for pizza and coffee. There will be a book stall, thanks to Take Note Hokitika, so you can check out the winning books from the Wanaka festival and a range of other mountain literature. Screening begins at 7.

Admission $20 / $16 for WCAC, FMC, NZAC, youth, seniors

Tickets available at the Hokitika Regent Theatre, tel 03 755 8101 or online

15th October, Hokitika Regent Theatre

The Hokitika Green Team are planning to run a special screening of the action documentary ‘A Plastic Ocean’ on October the 15th. Unlike a traditional movie showing, the film distributors requires 30 tickets be reserved in the next 14 days in order for the screening to occur. To reserve your tickets, please visit the My Demand Film Event Page here: tickets.demand.film... and make your booking.

A PLASTIC OCEAN begins when journalist Craig Leeson, searching for the elusive blue whale, discovers plastic waste in what should be pristine ocean. In this adventure documentary, Craig teams up with free diver Tanya Streeter and an international team of scientists and researchers, and they travel to twenty locations around the world over the next four years to explore the fragile state of our oceans, uncover alarming truths about plastic pollution, and reveal working solutions that can be put into immediate effect.
In the center of the Pacific Ocean gyre (is any large system of circulating ocean currents) our researchers found more plastic than plankton. A Plastic Ocean documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and eventually consumed by us.
