Tsunami warning downgraded but Northlanders warned to stay off beaches

Annette Lambly-Robinson Reporter from Whangārei Leader

What did you do? How scary is this.
. Does anyone have pics of their evacuation? Send them to annette.lambly@ fairfaxmedia.co.nz

Northlanders are being warned to stay off beaches and out of the water following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Canterbury.

Those living on the coast were evacuated early Monday morning as a precaution against a predicated tsunami.

Tsunami sirens were activated and Civil Defence Northland posted on Facebook asking Northlanders living on the coast to move inland or to higher ground immediately after the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management reported there was an imminent threat.

People near the beach at Ngunguru evacuated themselves to the hills and it is understood this also occurred at Ruakaka and Tutukaka.

The tsunami siren also sounded at Ruawai on Kaipara's west coast harbour, but a decision was made by the Ruawai Community Response group there was no immediate need to evacuate.

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
