We have reopened in accordance with Alert Level-3 restrictions. Those that come onsite only do so if and when it is necessary to carry-out their work or business and only when government health guidelines can be properly followed.
As of today, we are able to take orders for ceramics supplies, for delivery or contactless pick-up from the carpark, provided the order and payment can be made in-advance. Also, ceramic works that need firing in our kiln can be dropped-off and collected by arrangement. We certainly hope this offers some relief to our community.
Please email admin@quarryarts.org with any enquiries and we will provide assistance.
It is especially pleasing to invite our resident artists to return to use their studios.
For professional artists this is a particularly challenging time. For many artists, their source of livelihood has disappeared, and their prospects are unclear. The Quarry Arts Centre team will continue working with our arts community to find ways to maintain a healthy flow of inspiration and exchange through uncertain times.
To our wider community of artists and enthusiasts, we invite you to reach out to each other and to us, so that we all have the greatest opportunity to reinvent what we create together. In times of crisis like these we are all called upon to make positive changes to how we get things done, as a community.
Unfortunately, we are not yet able to open to the public for casual visits and our ongoing schedule of workshops and exhibitions is still on-hold.
The annual Great Plate event will be going ahead! We’re working to keep it on schedule, in July, and we will keep you all updated. The Great Plate is an important fundraising event on the Quarry Arts Centre calendar with much ado and a great amount of fun had by all. We are so very grateful to our generous community of artists and supporters; ‘throwing’ or sculpting plates, painting, embellishing and donating them for a high-stakes online auction. This year’s event will be especially meaningful in these interesting times.
Thank you all for your ongoing interest in this arts community. Stay in touch.

Crews are strictly following Covid-19 controls and safety remains a number one priority so if you come across Northpower crews working, please stay clear as they are safely inside their work bubbles.
Many Northpower staff are still working remotely from their homes and while Northpower’s offices and depots remain closed to visitors, staff are ready to help. And believe me the May issue is packed with the good stuff, with ideas of what you can sow, plant, pick and preserve to make the most of your garden right now, plus Lynda Hallinan reflects on 60 lessons for gardeners from the lockdown, a bumper gardening quiz, and you can visit a spectacular Taupō garden alive with birds, a whimsical wonderland in Glenorchy in full bloom and meet the clever and resourceful gardeners of the Chatham Islands... all without leaving your bubble. And thanks so much to everyone who has been in touch to offer their support to the NZ Gardener team, especially those who have subscribed or renewed or purchased a subscription as a gift (an NZ Gardener subscription is a great Mother's Day idea, just sayin'!) We are so grateful to you all, and it's your support that allows us to keep inspiring and informing gardeners from all around New Zealand as we have been doing now for more than 75 years. Please share this message with your gardening groups on social too. We’re looking forward to the many more years of celebrating the amazing gardens and gardeners of New Zealand that lie ahead.

We could easily lose what we have gained. Our success, or failure, depends on the decisions that we’ll each make alone – but which in turn – will affect all of us.
Two weeks then a review
• On 11 May, we will review our progress and decide if we can safely continue to step down restrictions, or if more measures are required to protect us all.
• So the decisions we each make now, matter. Because every interaction we have is an opportunity for the virus to spread.
Keeping safe at Alert Level 3
• At Alert Level 3, the best way to keep those around you safe, is by keeping your bubble small. Interact with as few people as possible. Less people equals less risk. And continue to stay at home whenever you can.
• We should each be making the minimal number of trips. Be sure to stay local, and only make necessary trips.
• And importantly, work and learn from home if you can.
Let’s do this
We’re a team of 5 million. Formidable. And we can do this.
So thank you New Zealand for making the right decisions, when it really counts.

lightly tethered leaves,
A hemis-fear away families blanched,
and all-together grieved.
Bands of whistling, darkening clouds,
chimed in with bell-vire' towers,
And squalled upon our sacred shores,
their deadly Covid showers.
Harken! Forced to act and act with force,
stepped-up our stately queen,
Her A-team laboured as surgeons might,
in a patient's dream.
Locked-down, not out, our nation true arose,
to smote the viral foe,
E-sent workers, checkpoint heroes, all of us,
battled toe-to-toe.
'Tihei mauri ora!' encored high-up ancient folk,
a'bow in Matariki,
'Toia mai! Toia mai!' rejoined our captain queen,
with wiri feathered tiki.
O! As Maui had once pulled and fought,
to bare for us our lands,
So a'same our nation pulling taut was hauled,
by Jacinda Ardern's calloused hands.
Many lives were saved and others cared a'not,
as our strategy evolved,
Vigilance with contact tracing, upped in rank,
For those in health were gold.
As wild winds calmed, light flittered, coloured,
with pi-waka amongst our forest trees,
Thoughts turned to thank our selfless leader,
who'd brought us off our knees.
NZ paused a'mome' upon creative gesture,
of pure variant-word idea,
To capture 'cind' [kind] as in her name we see,
O! Our gift to her was clear.
'Be kind', her call, as 'cind' we immortalise it,
by quill and worded power,
As 'cind', our hearts rejoice, her legacy to us,
in our nations darkest hour.

So, from next week, will we all walk around like this man and his bubble? As I was racing around the lawn today with the mower, I could not shed the mental image of being followed by one of them.

Free Algaves. We just pulled lots of Algaves from our garden. There a range of sizes (only the big ones are in the photograph but there are lots of smaller ones). They aren't spikey so family friendly and transplant well. If you are interested please contact Erin on 0220358523

Rain fall said we got approximately 0.8mm.
While we are looking to be getting some rain next week, it will not be the amount we need to get us out of this situation quickly.
"In a bid to further reduce water use across our District, Whangarei District Council is establishing Level three water restrictions in the Whangārei District at 8am on Thursday 16 April 2020."
"The 12 months to date have been the driest in recorded history in Whangārei District. Dam, river and groundwater levels have fallen to record low levels. While residents on the public water supply have succeeded in their efforts to reduce water use, insufficient rain to replenish these sources has fallen, and little rain is forecast in coming months."
