Reno blogging saved one couple $35k... but it didn't come cheap

I've always thought of reno blogging as a way to document a difficult process in a fun, relatable way. The benefit? Emotional support and maybe advice from folks following your journey - and maybe a little ego bump from showing off your mad wallpapering skills.
If you're lucky, and good, you might be given a couple of cans of paint from your local hardware store, to help you on the way - but that would be the icing on the tip of the social media cake.
Few of us would have the energy or knowhow to turn their reno into a part time side hustle that's both creatively fulfilling, and engaging.
But that's exactly what Moochstyle's Shayden and Georgia Whipps have done - with some pawsome help from their gorgeous dog Frankie. They've been blogging their Christchurch villa reno since they bought their home and Shayden shared their story with us for the final episode of First Rung, our podcast. A first time homeowner and renovator, Shayden is such an inspiring guy to chat with. He makes you want to jump in and give it go. Check out his story and let us know what you think.

From November 11, it will be illegal to sell vapes to under 18’s and advertising and sponsorship of vaping products will be banned altogether. Vaping will also be banned in legislated smoke-free areas such as:

- indoor workplaces
- cafes and pubs
- schools and early childhood centres
- public transport.

We think that everyone, especially parents need to be aware that vapes are now R18 and can’t be used in schools.

An Accidental Bushman
The Making of a Forest Ranger

More great yarns from the author of Cannibals, Crocodiles and Cassowaries

Growing up in small town Taranaki, Ross wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life. He just knew that he enjoyed hunting, hiking, trapping, fishing, and exploring the wilds of New Zealand. The outdoors was Ross’ element.

During his first year out of secondary school, a chance newspaper advertisement launched Ross upon a career that would take him through many adventures over four decades, through 42 countries, and innumerable close shaves.

In An Accidental Bushman (the prequel to Cannibals, Crocodiles and Cassowaries, published in 2019), Ross tells about how it all came to be—and about some of the incorrigible larrikins, precarious predicaments, and hair-raising exploits that shaped his training and early career as a Forest Ranger in New Zealand.

Ross has a way of telling a story that draws you into the moment and sweeps you along with the action. There are plenty of laughs (some at Ross’s expense) and enough scrapes and shenanigans to make you wonder how Ross ever survived to write the book!

An Accidental Bushman sometimes reads like a hilarious instruction book of what not to do, with many of Ross’s ill-fated adventures stemming from what simply seems like a good idea at the time—like his disastrous introduction to boating with no experience, no safety gear, and ultimately no working engine! Ross makes a habit of crashing vehicles, manufactures cyanide possum bait (and lives to tell the tale), gets seriously lost in the bush, spends a night in a haunted hut, gets marooned on an island amidst swirling floodwaters, contracts hypothermia, and survives some memorable culinary disasters. It’s clear that without his uncanny knack of always falling on his feet, Ross wouldn’t be with us to tell these stories today.

Ross also shares yarns of the colourful bunch of larrikins with whom he trained, worked, and socialised, regaling us with tales of interrupted trysts, foul revenge, forest fires, thieving wildlife, crippling hangovers, poaching, parties, and motorised mayhem.

The book includes some 60 photographs from Ross’s vast collection which richly illustrate his writing.

Settle in for another book of rip-roaring adventures that’s as hard to put down as the last one!

I put this post on FB last Saturday. It has been very popular so I have decided to share it here on neighborly. as below.

Feeling blessed today I went into the Whangarei CBD on my mobility scooter went to my favorite cafe Fresh for takeouts the staff were lovely. I sat on my scooter in the sun and watched the shoppers go by while I ate.
So many smiling happy people, then off to Motown for a haircut and more happy people.

Then Pak N Save again on my mobility scooter, it can be difficult to reach high areas 4 different women helped me at different times all with a smile.

Then headed home while going through the town basin my hat blew off, by the time I was able to turn around a young lady asked if she could get it for me.

All assistance today was appreciated thank you the people of Whangarei
