14th February - 10:45am Update: National State of Emergency
Minister for Emergency Management, Kieran McAnulty, has confirmed a National State of Emergency this morning due to the widespread damage across the country due to Cyclone Gabrielle.
While many regions have already declared a local state of emergency, a National State of Emergency gives the National Controller legal authority to apply resources across the country in support of a national level response.
Here's what you need to know:
- Heavy rain red warnings are in place for Northland and Hawke's Bay, with red strong wind warnings also for Northland, Coromandel and Taranaki. Check all weather warnings on the MetService website.
- States of emergency have been declared in Northland, Auckland, Tairāwhiti, Ōpōtiki, Thames-Coromandel District, Waikato District, Hauraki District, Whakatāne District, Bay of Plenty, Napier and Hastings.
- There has been a landslide in Murawai with one firefighter missing.
- Gisborne is feared cut off and the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Residents are to take note of the Welfare Centres for Gisborne and Coromandel.
- A number of road closures are in place across the North Island. View these on the Waka Kotahi NZTA website.
- Fire and Emergency is urging people to only call 111 if life or safety is at risk after a surge in calls.
- In Auckland there are 27 shelters and civil defence centres where people can go in an emergency.

2pm Update for Hawke's Bay:
Multiple evacuations needed in Puketapu, Esk Valley, Rissington, Omahu, Waiohiki, Jervoistown and Meeanee and Waipawa.
Many remain trapped in cars and houses. Several bridges have been taken out with access between Hastings and Napier now cutoff. More than 20,000 people are without power and cellphone communication in and out of the region is patchy.
Omahu residents needing shelter can go to Hastings Sports' Centre. Taradale residents can head to St Joseph's Māori Girls' School.

Like my garden, others gardens are producing fruit, just not ripe, and not seasonal. My fruit that should have been ready for Christmas, nope. And my fruit that shouldn’t be coming in yet, yup.
Unfortunately, there’s not a lot we can do about that.
My gardens are still wet footed, from the rain, so, except for my potted plants I’m not watering. Others, I’ve noticed are. If you need to water, consider mulching, or growing ground cover. Your gardens will maintain a healthy level of moisture longer, and require watering less.
You are more likely to over water your plants out of habit, than need, with weather like we’ve been having.
Browning on top doesn’t mean your gardens are dead. It means they are putting all their efforts into protecting the roots.
If you feel you must water, consider drip lines. They use up to 2/3 less water, more effectively, than hose or sprinkler watering. Simply because the water soaks straight to the ground and into the roots. Sprinkler and hose water evaporates at an eye watering rate (pun intended), before it soaks below the surface. Up to 1/3 before it even hits the ground.
Also, lawns. While mowing them as short as possible keeps them tidy, it sadly, also kills the roots. Like scalps, the ground needs cover to protect it from the sun. But also the rain and weeds.
Lawns that are military buzz cut short dry out, severely, in the sun, which kills the roots, hardens the ground and leaves them prone to weeds, like couch grass. Longer thicker grass is softer, and easier able to block couch. It also protects against prickles. But it also keeps the ground soft enough to absorb rain. Hard ground is like concrete, prone to flooding.
Think about your gardens and lawns as if they were extensions of you. What happens if you over water yourself, especially when it’s hot? Or don’t cover up in the heat of the sun?
Simple. We dehydrate faster if we take in too much fluid too quickly. Because we literally flush our systems out. Our bodies cannot absorb that much fluid at once. Slow and steady, a little at a time.
And if we don’t cover up in the heat of the sun? We have one of the higher rates of skin cancer in the world. One of the worst weeds to have in our lives.
Take care of your gardens and lawns. Take care of yourselves and each other. And take it easy on Mother Nature. She knows what she’s doing. She just doesn’t know what we’re doing and it’s making her mad.

That way, if they get wet, they can just take their long pants off at school and hang them over their bags, and not have to spend half the day in wet shorts or skirts.
Coming home isn’t so bad, as they can get changed at home, but having to sit with a wet lower half is not great. An extra pair of socks in their bags can also come in handy, given most sneakers aren’t waterproof, so even if their shoes get wet, they can stay indoors with dry socks on.
Does anyone have a working 12V air pump/compressor they don’t need anymore? I’m happy to pay for it.
