HI Folks,
Just letting you know that if you are like me and sometimes buy things at Farmers to 'check them at home and then take back what you don't actually want', Farmers in Hastings seem to have a new management policy. The docket still says 14 days to return as it always has. The part that has changed which is absolutely their right to do so is that the 'unwritten kindness' they have shown in the past no longer applies. I was a little surprised today to try and return something that was a little over the official return date to be told they are tightening up so I was unable to return it.
Absolutely understand, but as it is different to years worth of previous 'late returns by me' - thought I might let you know in case you need to know of the new 'tightening up'.
So pleased I have learnt my lesson on a single item that was on sale and not on a bag of things!! Phew!
This is not a grumble - I think the staff at Farmers are great!

Reminder for motorists this long weekend

Note on speed threshold: Over the holiday period – 4pm on Friday 19 October to 6am on Tuesday 23 October 2018 – if you're detected by a safe speed camera exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 4 km/h, you are highly likely to be ticketed.

Police and the NZ Transport Agency are reminding people to start their journey well rested and stay safe on the roads if they are going away for the long weekend.

“Share the road like it’s your family driving around you,” says Superintendent Steve Greally, National Manager Road Policing. “This is where Police’s focus remains as well. We know the four main behaviours that contribute to death and serious injury on our roads are people driving distracted, drivers impaired by fatigue, drugs, or alcohol, drivers speeding, and people not wearing their seatbelt.

Statistics: During Labour weekend in 2017 there were five fatal crashes and 76 reported injury crashes. These crashes resulted in six deaths, 23 serious injuries and 103 minor injuries.

In 2017, fatigue was a contributing factor in 32 fatal crashes and 100 serious injury crashes. Driver fatigue is difficult to identify or recognise as contributing to a crash. This means it’s likely that fatigue is under-recorded, and contributes to more crashes than we realise.

The discovery of the bodies of two elderly men in their homes weeks after they died has prompted Hawke's Bay police to encourage residents to keep an eye on their elderly neighbours.

Detective Mike Signal said the men had been found in their Napier homes in two separate incidents over the past two months. "It's hard to tell how long they had been dead for, but it's looking like 10 days to two weeks," Signal said.

If you have an older neighbour you may be able to play a key role in making their lives a little easier. In doing this, you could provide some valuable help where it is needed and you might also make a new friend.

· Ask - If your neighbour is an older person, there may be relatively simple tasks that they are no longer able to do. Don't be shy, approach them and ask if there's anything they need help with.

· Reading the signs - If you have not seen your neighbour for a while, pay particular attention to some simple signs. Do the lights come on at night? Do the curtains get drawn? Is the garden tended? If you have any reason to suspect that your neighbour might be in need of help, knock on the door to check they are okay.

· Follow up - If you are concerned for your neighbour's wellbeing, or suspect that they may not be able to look after themselves, ask them if they are okay. If you suspect that they need help but they are unresponsive to your offers then seek advice from Police or Age Concern.

Here are some tips to make sure you and your loved ones are well prepared and stay safe:

1. Check the marine weather forecast before you go out, it could save your life! 58% of boaties already check it. We want the other 42% to make it a habit. MetService New Zealand's Marine App makes it easy.

2. Tests your life jackets. Pull hard on the straps and see if any of them stretch or rip. Check all over for any existing tears in the straps and any cuts or punctures in the life jacket. If yes, do not use the life jacket, dispose of it, and replace it. Always check if it floats before putting them on. Keep in mind kapok life jackets should not be used as they can absorb water and sink, their cotton straps also easily rip! Burn them or bin them, but whatever you do - don't use or resell them.

3. For this year's Safer Boating Week, boaties are being reminded to “Prep, Check, Know” - prepare your boat, check your gear and know the rules before going on the water.

Let's put in the time and effort to make sure there are NO water related accidents or deaths this Labour Day long-weekend! Don't forget to look out for each other and report any concerns you have to local authorities.

Hi Neighbours, Good News. Stopped by the Swim Gym today and found out that:

1. They hope to re-open on the 16th of this month if all goes to plan.

2. It will be a 24 hours swipe card access facility.

3. I had a walk through and it is looking really well 'done up' and hooray there are new heaters in the bathrooms so it looks like we will be allowed to have them 'on' in the winter! And the pool cover will be being used as by not using it they have had to do major renovations because the moisture was in the wood etc. And the heaters for the pool and pumps were not working properly so they have new ones so will be much better and more efficient.

4. Under New Management. Apparently, there are no records of our old memberships. Not sure what will happen with the classes that were running. New Management will let us know, but if you would like to nicely convey your desires to them, I am sure you can leave a nice letter down there for the new manager to consider.

5. Totally new Sauna and looks like a big spa pool which will be a nice addition.

6. Bathrooms have all been done up and look great. Shower heads are higher so taller people will fit under them! Hooray!

7. The pool has been cleaned and the tiles around the top are actually blue!

8. Sounds like we can either pay for the Gym or the Pool or both. The swipe card will let you into the main building and then will let you in either side depending on what you have paid for.
We will need to wait for the price list and how it will work.

This is all as I understand it and am only passing it on as while I was there, three other people also came to inquire as to when it was back up and running etc. So, thought I might share what I gleaned. My apologies if anything turns out to be different. Passing this on in good faith.
Be great to have the Swim Gym back up and running. From a Member of the Public and this is not official from the Swim Gym. Just thought some of you might like to know. Cheers. Rhonda
