A council boss has apologised for a lack of communication after it installed a series of speed-cutting chicanes that were panned by Tamahere locals.

And a top cop says motorists even started speeding and using the wrong lane to get through them.

The contentious issues of free parking and higher fines in Hamilton’s CBD are set to come under the spotlight at a special 2.5-hour councillor workshop on Wednesday, with two leading mayoral contenders taking differing positions ahead of the discussion.

“Fiscal conservative” councillor Tim Macindoe, who’s calling for a return to two hours free parking, said on Monday he’ll also highlight calls for a more flexible approach when it comes to handing out fines.

A potential buyer for Chateau Tongariro has been blocked from entering the rapidly deteriorating heritage hotel and has serious concerns for its future.

This comes after the Government said in recent Budget 2025 documents the demolition of Chateau Tongariro was “being investigated”, and declared the hotel a “fiscal risk”, but would not reveal how much it would cost to save it from the wrecking ball.
